DMA enabled IDE, IRQs behaving
After an initial establishing release, the Iyonix Linux project has announced further developments this week. A recent release features the following improvements:
  • Fully working IDE with DMA enabled by default
  • IRQs fully working (no need to move the USB card)
  • Plus, various other minor improvements

The project, which is still in its early stages, is currently distributing version 2.4.19-rmk7-ds3-pn1 of the Linux kernel for the XScale powered Iyonix hardware. Users are recommended to thoroughly read through the documentation on the project's website before trying out the Iyonix Linux port as there are a few issues users need to be aware of.

We're told a suitable Debian distribution for the Iyonix is in the works.

Out of interest, what is the point in running Linux on an Iyonix?

It's a laugh isn't it, I assume it's not too different in price from various xscale evalution boards, plus the whole cross compile from arm linux to RISC OS thing that's going on. And it's quiet, low heat output, great for weather like this. Plus Gb networking.

I think it's really for people with 2 iyonixen :- ) (you're not turning my smilies into graphics damnit)

I suppose the cross-compile is a possible 'worthwhile'

As for quiet, low heat output, try a Via C3 based MicroITX system. Gb networking can be added to that cheaply and the overall machine will be faster and less expensive than an Iyonix.

Just seems a little daft to spend all that dosh on an ostensibly fast RISC OS box, only to put Linux on it.

Running Linux on Iyonix might encourage a few users who would rather have one box on their desk rather than two. It would be great to be able to run RISC OS and Linux at the same time, rather than dual boot though. I agree with kinnison, you'd really have to want it on ARM to not get some other UNIX/Linux box which would be faster, cheaper and better supported.

There's no doubt that if you want a fast Linux machine you get a PC (or Mac if you want fast and expensive :-), but as Kin has suggested there are a variety of niches that a faster desktop ARM machine can fill.

With linux on the Iyonix I can develop ARM software that I otherwise would develop on a windows machine with a ARM board connected to it by serial cable.
