  • Executive decision time for Midlands show
First came the DIY RISC OS laptops crammed into hand-beaten metal cases with all the style of a 1980s Skoda and the portability of a bedside table. Now one RISC OS user has given his A9home an executive look by neatly placing it into a Samsonite briefcase. John Rickman will be demonstrating his A9exec kit alongside Paul Stewart's third-generation A9home laptop at a RISC OS show in Birmingham early next month.

  • Experimental RISC OS emulation layer for ARM-powered devices
Programmer David Given has started work on a miniature reimplementation of the RISC OS kernel and plugged an ARM emulator into it to allow simple RISC OS programs to run on Unix-like operating systems. His work includes modules taken from the RISC OS Open sources. Meanwhile, another coder has spoken of writing a similar emulation layer for Intel-powered PCs - although he wouldn't be the first to attempt such a project.

A low-cost computer-controlled Braille board has been prototyped by a RISC OS-using university student. Undergraduate Edward Rogers hopes to sell his completed units for as little as 200 quid each to schools and families to allow more blind children to continue learning Braille. And he said he wanted to launch his venture using RISC OS-powered kit before offering a package for other platforms.

  • Iyonix emulator mulled by developer
The open source machine emulator GXEmul could be used to create an Iyonix emulator for RISC OS users and testers of ROOL ROM images, says one prominent coder. GXEmul already includes emulation of Intel's 80321 chip, the processor used in the Iyonix, and can run NetBSD on hardware similar to Castle's computer. Anyone interested in taking a closer look can apply John-Mark Bell's initial patch to the source code.

  • Geeks celebrate RISC OS time epoch
Clock-watching nerds rejoiced this week as all modern ROS machines reached a mildly baffling milestone. The OS keeps track of the current time by storing it as the number of one hundredths of a second elapsed since midnight January 1, 1900 - and this figure ticked over to 0x5000000000 in the early hours of Tuesday, provoking excitement among some.

Jeff Doggett has ported a library to create a RISC OS module that can access USB-based FAT32 storage devices greater than 2GB in size, such as memory sticks and Flash cards. Jeff said: "This is just a filing system module - there is no desktop front-end or anything user friendly. It's version 0.01 which should give you some idea that you should try it first on a test drive before letting it loose on anything valuable."

The group have used the college's campus since 2002, which marked the launch of the Castle Iyonix.
