Flatscreen monitors: expLAN hopes to modernise the RISC OS desktop

By Chris Williams. Published: 17th Nov 14:46:24 | Permalink | Printable

Need more space on that desk? Tired of that chunky monitor? ExpLAN's Samsung L17A LCD monitor is a perfect flatscreen display and is fully compatible with RISC OS.

Flatscreen monitor

The monitor specification is:

  • 17-inch nominal size (equiv to 19" CRT screen)
  • Resolution (max) 1360x1024
  • Analogue input
  • Stereo sound
  • USB ports (1 up, 4 down)

The supplied RISC OS monitor driver, (the MDF file), for the L17A can deliver 32-thousand colours at 1024x768 whilst running at a bandwidth of 130MB/sec - achievable by a standard RiscStation R7500 without any VRAM. The LCD monitor achieves this by refreshing the screen at only 60 times a second- this is low enough to create a nasty flickering image on a standard CRT screen but not on a LCD screen.

The monitor will be demonstrated at the
BARUG (Bristol) User Group meeting
on 29th November.
