New editor for Eureka

Another Sibelius fan

Eureka logoMedia watch Peter Jennings has stepped down as editor of Eureka, the magazine published quarterly by The ARM Club for its members, as Andrew Wyver succeeds him to become editor.

"The hand over has gone very smoothly with Peter being very helpful," Andrew told drobe.co.uk earlier today. "In a moment of madness I volunteered."

Andrew also edits a magazine for the Association of Woodwind Teachers, describes himself as a "peripatetic music teacher" and uses Sibelius 7 on a RiscPC and Sibelius 3.1 on a WindowsXP PC to do music typsetting and publishing.

"I also own a laptop, which gets lugged around the schools I teach in and runs WindowsXP and VirtualRiscPC-SE. I have been using Acorn machines for about 10 years and PCs for about 5 years," he added, also pointing out that magazine production will be done in Impression and OvationPro on a trusty StrongARM RiscPC.

Eureka last hit the headlines in May 2003, when it exclusively published the first review of the Microdigital Omega.

Nice to hear that a number of our platform news magazines are still going :-) Sometimes I wonder how these magazine survive though... In Australia and NZ I miss seeing Acorn platform Mags in stores like I once did in Melbourne about 10 years ago. But like a Dinosaur mystery, they dropped from the book store supplies like dead flies. :-( My only means in the lands of "DownUnder" in getting these magazines in the past was to buddy up with a another User (of whom most were hard to find or extinct) or mail order them from the UK (an expensive exercise for a (a=one) user... :-( But the internet now keeps the "Sunshine" news radiating down here for the time being. Maybe a thought if there was any interest in the "Yahoo-Group-riscosNZ" or similar groups here in New Zealand to bulk subscribe to keep the SHIPPING costs down to a TITANIC low. Any other bright suggestion? Hmm. Andrew Wyver (the new Eureka Editor) seem to have a similar simila RISC OS !Sibelius7 (Publishing / and possibly recording) problem as me... Cheers, Steve.

On my way back from the Wakefeld show, I stopped off in Stoke-On-Trent to pick up 200 or so RISC OS magazines that were about to be dumped. Included were ten copies of Eureka from around 1996 - 1999: It's a great little magazine, quite a bit better than you'd expect from a "Club". These too are edited by Peter Jennings. The man has done a good stint. Memo to self; "I must investigate The ARM Club."

Want an Acorn/RISC OS magazine in the land of "Down Under"? Well, John Cartmell of Qercus magazine put me on to ESD in Auckland. I contacted ESD today and the outcome suggestion is to order Qercus direct. As much as ESD would like to bulk supply copies to Kiwi's, it is double handling, shipping and time taken etc., they say it appears much better time and cost wise to order direct. Other imported magazines end up costing the same or more to buy from stores in New Zealand. ESD spoke highly of Qercus and does offer much more news and info than one may find on the Net or in previous mags of our platform. It could be about NZ$11 to get a copy shipped here, each month or two, the advice I got is the expense is well worth it. Cheers, Steve :-)
