The website of GCCSDK, the home of the RISC OS port of GCC to RISC OS is in the process of moving, from its old home at DVSR, to a subdomain of riscos.info, the RISC OS C Programming website. The new website is http://gccsdk.riscos.info.

GCCSDK development continues to be led by Nick Burrett, who reminds us to update any links to the site and any email configuration for its mailing lists.

The latest release of GCC for RISC OS is 3.3, but version 3.4 of GCC is now in testing for RISC OS, which contains considerable improvements. Nick comments:

"GCC 3.4 brought in features that I'd hoped were going to be in 3.3:
  • There's a re-written C++ parser that more closely follows the current ISO standard.

  • Function-at-a-time and unit-at-a-time mode compilation/optimisation. The latter, given sufficient memory, will build a whole source code unit as one parse tree and then optimise that. Inter-procedure analysis can then be applied to work out better register allocation and improve inlining heuristics.

  • Performance. The 3.3 compiler was disapointingly slow. The 3.4 compiler is faster. There's the potential to use pre-compiled headers, which would be a big boost for C++ compilation. Most of the time spent building the C++ helloworld.cc application was compiling the libstdc++ header files. I haven't ported this feature yet though.

  • Improved pipeline models of ARM chipsets. Otherwise referred to as the DFA scheduler, this feature more accurately models the characteristics of the different ARM architectures. Users should find definite improvements when building applications that target the relevant architecture for their computer."
