Update on the RISC OS books front By Chris Williams. Published: 10th Jun 2004, 18:16:17 | Permalink | Printable ARM asm book in reprint ProAction, part of dealer APDL, is reprinting Peter Cockrell's book titled ARM Assembly Language Programming. The book will be available in two sizes, namely A5 and A4. Peter's book, arguably one of the better tomes on the subject of ARM programming, was published freely online around this time last year, although was initially published by Computer Concepts. "There have been a number of people after a printed copy, and while it's not going to shift bucketloads, I've got the gear necessary here to put it together," explained ProAction's David Bradforth, on why he's reprinting a book that's now on the interweb. As a reminder, ProAction are also publishing First Steps with RISC OS, and the first part should be in the post next week. Citing a "superb level of interest", ProAction's book will cover RISC OS in general and RISC OS 4, although RISC OS 5 will be covered if requested. As new features are added to our operating system, and hopefully as new users join the platform, the importance of having good and useful documentation available cannot be understated. You should start with something like BASIC which was designed to make it easy for beginners (hence the acronym). I'd actually recommend some old BBC (pre RISC OS) books to total beginners as they were far gentler on introducing the concepts. If shipping costs to NewZealand are a problem, RISCOS Ltd do a CD of manuals that includes the official Acorn BBC BASIC guide. [link] THere's a lot of more advanced stuff on there too: Programmers Reference Manuals Volumes 1,2,3,4,5, DDE, Toolbox, C++ and ASM, in addition it includes the PRM Vol 5a, RISC OS 3 User Guide, Internet, Omniclient and Timecode manuals. There appears to be many topics in programming to cover and possibly progressive in some ways, with the "Volumes 1,2,3...", "Toolbox", "C++" and so on.... I see in Martin's comments. I do know of a couple of users not too far from here who I could call on for assistance, but the hardest part is finding time when they are not busy. It may be a good idea to find a couple more who are interested in working on learning together as a small group! Are there groups doing this in the U.K. or Europe? I'm trying to figure out where you're going with what you've said, but I'm really not sure. _Please_, before you make one of your huge posts of disconnected statements to drobe, have a think about what you're actually trying to say - and proof it. I think in most cases, you could say a lot more with a lot less, and make it clearer what your point is. mrchocky on 11/6/04 11:25AM [ Reply | Permalink | Report ] Personally I'd recommend learning Python, rather than BASIC. You're much less likely to pick up bad habits, and it's also much easier to use once you start to do more intermediate level things. Also, Guido's tutorial (which I learnt from initially) is very good, though admittedly not the meisterwerk of John A. Coll. Support should also be better - the RISC OS port of Python is one of the more up-to-date languages ported to RISC OS so there should be no problem getting support from generic python user groups (and newsgroups, specifically). However, if you do go the BASIC route, comp.sys.acorn.programming is probably already busy enough with relatively techie queries, but the programming forum at "that other RISC OS portal" might be a suitable place for beginner queries.
