thumbnail of the AALP book front coverAlligata Media is moving its range of books to dealer APDL, who will now deal with the sales and distribution of the dead tree based titles. Although Alligata will retain copyright and publish the books, APDL will handle all sales enquiries, including payment by credit card, and provide Alligata's titles a regular RISC OS show presence.

Alligata's titles include RISC OS First Steps, ARM Assembly Language Programming (new front cover pictured left) and Basic V: A Dabhand Guide ('real soon now').

"Alligata Media, the organisation through which I publish a variety of materials, is going through a period of streamlining," Alligata's Dave Bradforth explained to drobe.co.uk.

"The current circumstances of the market aside, I have increasingly been finding my time split between personal commitments and the demands of work outside the RISC OS market (which is sadly quite essential). As such, I'm having trouble meeting everything and as such something's got to give."

APDL will be despatching RISC OS First Steps and ARM Assembly Language Programming as soon as stocks are available. Below is a brief FAQ about it all.

Q. Are Alligata and APDL related entities?
A. "No! Alligata Media is the branding I use for my own publications (two more recent examples being a movie magazine (MovieDomain) and a Mac magazine (MacDomain)). I work closely with APDL, focused on the development of the APDL-ProAction range, but that's part of APDL. Alligata isn't."
Q. Will there be further RISC OS titles from Alligata?
A. "Yes. I've got a Draw tutorial in front of me that just needs suitably updating, and this will be my next project after the RISC OS First Steps course."
Q. What about RISCDomain?
A. "Despite my temptation on occasion to resurrect this title, it is now officially dead in the water. It's a project that I thoroughly enjoyed working on, but production issues with the last issue resulted in a quality I really wasn't satisfied with. As a result, I'm not prepared to reactivate the title unless I can guarantee that I would have both the time to compile it correctly and guarantee its production values."
Q. Perhaps you could release PDF versions of previous issues?
A. "No. Sorry, but the original files for each issue of RISCDomain have long since disappeared, and I have no means of resurrecting them from printed copies as I seem to have lost my own archive ones."
Q. So can people freely copy past issues?
A. "Of the magazine, certainly - if you want to photocopy it please do so, and pass it to your friends. However, the accompanying disc contains commercial software and must not under any circumstances be copied."

PhotoDesk, OHP, Alligata Media Books.... Maybe a number of RISC OS software and products could change hands/dealership more willingly now? Interesting moves, as we wait and see...

"Maybe a number of RISC OS software and products could change hands/dealership more willingly now?"

What are you talking about?

If you're referring to the legal action between Castle and ROL, I really don't see how that would encourage the "change [of] hands" of software that you talk of.

Sorry, "legal action" should of course have been "conflict".

In reply to Sawadee... I think the Photodesk deal is purely to ensure continued availability. There was never any question about the Alligata books becoming unavailable: they're my own pet project, I just purely wanted to make things easier for users to buy than having to send cheque/postal order or PayPal payment.

First Steps with RISC OS is coming along quite nicely, and will be despatched next week to all those who've bought it. All such people can expect an email shortly explaining what's going on.

I certainly hope so. The catalogue of software that APDL sell, support and develop is vast. If it were to disappear....

A manual covering Pluto might be an idea.

em2ac: "A manual covering Pluto might be an idea" I'll look into it, though it's rather late now since most Pluto users will (presumably) already have learned how to use it.

In reply to apdl:

Perhaps, but some (at least 2) will have stopped using it and gone to Messenger Pro instead. A well written and well structured manual would have prevented that.

In reply to riscdomain:

Well, it comes with a manual in the form of a number of emails within the program but I wouldn't call it well structured and some people prefer a paper manual. Both my sister and myself would have paid extra for a paper manual had it been available. (I still might now).

Cheers!
