APDL readies TypeStudio 2

Text design software

FontFX demo textAPDL is to soon release TypeStudio 2, a text and font manipulation package - think MS WordArt, but at least with some class and RISC OS font anti-aliasing. An example of the software's output is pictured on the right.

With TypeStudio, users can apply shadows to text, fit text to a curve, and perform other effects, with the final design saved as a Drawfile for other applications to use and work on. We're told TypeStudio 2 is a "new" application that's an "altered version of FontFX 6", and will be compatible with RISC OS 3.1 to 5. It'll also be bundled on a CD along with at least 100 fonts and TypeStudio 1, according to APDL.

If 'TypeStudio 2' is based on FontFX rather than TypeStudio 1 when this sounds like a good bundle. FontFX was always the better option but it sounds like you'll get both in this bundle. At school FontFX was used extensively for project covers producing effective titling in a good range of styles. Now if APDL could look at Insignia for ideas - but without slowing down the program - then this program could have a new lease of life. I don't like the change of name though - sorry! ;-(

I have to agree with Q. I have Typestudio 1 in both its Beebug original and in "Beta" ProAction update form. On a RiscPC, the former is not terribly stable and the latter is abysmal.

I presume ProAction have abandoned the the update because, even after paying for the Beta and nagging them, I never received any further updates. My advice, as they say in the consumer magazines: 'Avoid'.

The early versions of FontFx that I've used (years ago) were much better. The reason I bought Typestudio was its WSIWYG interface - FontFX was always a dialogue box full of settings and then hit OK to see what you got.

There was an additional bit to the text Chris received saying that if the people who bought the first ProAction edition from me directly emailed me, I'll email them the current FontFX. We're developing it further, to include most of the current features of TypeStudio, but as an interim I'd like to offer it directly to the four who bought betas from me.

We've not abandoned the update - we've rethought it.

Email me directly - dbproaction@aol.com - to discuss.

[note this applies SOLELY to those who bought it from me directly: any copies sold through APDL do not count for a free upgrade].

I have not used Typestudio, but I do have an older FontFX and agree with "Q" and "Tony" about how nice the simple FontFX is to use. It sounds like that the text fits to curves and can these curves or shapes be manipulated into numerous shape design we create before fitting the text? (maybe some of these answers are on the Typestudio web site?) But something (like Typestudio) updated or new with a few more features etc sound great! Regards, Steve.

I agree with "Q", I like the simplicity of the early version of FontFX that I have but would love something similar with more features. I find that a quick and easy to use Font graphic package is important when you don't have time for more complex graphic software when a nice simple header is required in the Word Processors. Regards, Steve.

In reply to riscdomain: David,

I grumbled in public about your service so I'll now compliment you in public. Thanks for the copy of FontFX you sent me so promptly in response to my problems with the TypeStudio Beta I bought. It also seems to run fine on the Iyonix.

So how long has Drobe been the 'Watchdog' of the RISC OS world? ;-)
