Always with bigger fish to fry

ARM have this week acquired Artisan Components, in their biggest acquisition to date, which caused a little investor unrest. While ARM focuses on processor core design, it hopes to use Artisan's range of chip designs which include memories and I/O interfaces.

We last looked at the range of relevant ARM processor cores some time ago, and while Intel are making progress with their XScale cores, ARM have been persevering in the mobile embedded market. ARM are also this month holding their first developers' conference.

Earlier this month, a PDA virus was found in the wild, which affects ARM powered devices running WindowsCE. While Symantec gave the virus a low threat rating, one analyst described it as "setting a very scary precedent".

Does anyone know if we can expect to see the original (non-Intel) ARM processors back in RISC OS machine, like the Iyonix? Ie. ARM 9 or 10? Or would that perhaps reap little or no benefit?

I think it's only a matter of time before PDA/mobile phone viruses begin spreading massively through the global networks, so it should be imperative Service Providers begin adapting their products to deal with any forseeable threats.

RISC OS already runs on some ARM9s (Pace had a demo about 3 years ago, Castle/Tematic mentioned some porting work for another customer). But if the processor is, say, 5% of the cost of the machine who's going to want a slower processor for a $10 saving in machine cost?

If you're making a Gameboy or a mobile phone, this is another question. Though if one of ARM's licensees comes out with a processor significantly faster than the i80321 with the right peripherals and at the right price, I'm sure RISC OS hardware manufacturers would jump at the chance.

OT once again, but in reply to the flypig post, the iyonix on ebay appears to be poorly, it doesnt like booting up first time. Is this a common problem with iyoni ?

hEgelia - weren't Microdigital supposed to have a working ARM11 Omega by now, oh wait, they haven't got XScale working yet, or StrongARM for that matter......

In reply to markee174 i don't think it's the Chris Morison of !Organiser ect, he spells his name with one r, but the chris on ebay spells his second name with two. I could be wrong though ;-)

I don't think MD can be blamed for the lack of an ARM11 based machine just yet. So far as I can find out nobody will actually ship you any ARM11 types cpus yet. Which is a real pain as a project I was working with at a large HapPy company wanted to use something of that kind of performance. No shipping parts, somebody else gets the nod. :-(

An Iyonixs on ebay? My goodness, are they outdated already? Mybe if some more secondhand Iyonixs start to appear on ebay then the new prices should remain competitive? :angel: Regards, Steve

This one not on topic, but I will mention... checkout the "(new) User gallery" link on the Drobe page. Some more people are adding some great photos to view and share, I have just added some more showing our RISC OS computers in Kiwi our school. From my general impression most ARM's are aimed at embeded/mobile devices along the lines of mobile phones and network equipment, where as intel are pushing it's XScales into PDA's and may see some luck in light tablets.

Though I sometimes dream of massively parrellel systems based on cheaper ARM's, but that's more a dream than reality.
