'First Steps' book finally in print

By Chris Williams. Published: 11th Sep 2004, 20:32:41 | Permalink | Printable

Better late than never

Newsprint style ROS4 cubeOriginally slated for publication in May 2003, and then later delayed in March this year, Alligata Media have announced that its First steps with RISC OS 4 dead tree guide is finally in the post.

"Covering vanilla RISC OS 4 (the standard RISC OS 4.02/4.03 variants) it explains, in plain english, everything you need to get started with RISC OS 4 itself", describes Alligata's Dave Bradforth in his announcement. Later parts to the book, which like the Iyonix user guide is printed in a binder format, intend to cover RISC OS software, RISC OS Adjust and VirtualAcorn software. No timescale was given as to when these updates will appear, however.

In case you're wondering, earlier in the year Alligata were reluctant to cover RISC OS 5 due to what we understand is a low interest in the book from Iyonix users. The book is distributed by dealer APDL and if you order before the end of October, you'll get future updates to the guide "free of charge".

Bit odd for a guide book to come out a "few" years well after RO4 release. Maybe RO4 wasn't intending to have a guide book in the beginning, so it's a blessing to produce one now it's half way through it's decade of life expectancy? I am a RO4 user and it seems to me that by producing a RO4 guide at this point of time as an indication for an expected longer productive life span than I speculate? "Free of charge" updates? Is the update cost inclusive for outside the UK? (to New Zealand)

It's not a guide in the way that the Archimedes, or RISC OS 3 user guides were, primarily because it's being produced by a different company to the one that produces the OS (who are more in control of the OS's life-span). Maybe this is an indication of David Bradforth's expectations for RO4's productive life-span, however.

Well done to David Bradforth and APDL. This definatly helps fill the void with regards the lack of documentation for RISC OS users.
