Styx game, GCC, software and more

Round up motifGCC 3.4.1 released
The GCCSDK team have published release 1 of GCC 3.4.1 for RISC OS. GCC is a collection of software compilers that are available for free (that's free as in 'free speech' and 'free beer'), and the RISC OS port can build code from C, C++ and Fortran. The changelog has further details on the updates to the compilers and the Unixlib that accompanies the package.

You can Styx it where the sun don't shine
AcornArcade staffer Jeffrey Lee has re-released Tom Cooper's funky puzzle game Styx on the NoughtPointOne hosted website. With excessive tracker music pumping in the background, you have to guide a cursor around a landscape to trap enemies and complete the levels by drawing over them - it's hard to describe, but still very addictive and fun in true Cooper style. Styx is now StrongARM and RISC OS 4 and Select compatible, and Aemulor friendly.

Jeffrey also told us: "Unfortunately we haven't solved our conflict with CJE/Skillsware yet, so for the time being we'll only be doing re-releases of freeware games."

riscos.org face lift
Paul Vigay has redesigned his RISC OS resources portal, riscos.org. The old brown and orange theme has been discarded in favour of a more, fresh and minty green - the colour usually associated with the traditional Acorn era of nuts and later, cogs. Paul comments, "I've just started on a revamp project for RISCOS.org which I hope will prove productive and provide some new angles and aspects to RISC OS."

Software news
IEURL, Stuart Halliday's Internet Explorer favourites reader, is now up to version 2.51. Spam destroyer SpamStamp now has an updated performance window and no longer has a memory limit on its internal data structures - which vastly improves its spam catching capabilities.

Peter Everett, with the help of Andre Timmermans and others, has updated his KinoAmp and Tock software: KinoAmp now pulls video from disc faster than before and the desktop clock software has had numerous faults addressed and fixed.

Also, Nat Queen has improved his Q-Lock and Mail-Lock security and encryption software, while Bookmaker has been bug fixed and now supports hotkeys.

And finally
The BBC are planning on developing further an open source video format, to hopefully one day challenge the likes of other notorious proprietary video formats. Also, the BPI (the British equivalent of the RIAA), is following in the footsteps of its American cousin by taking legal action against music file sharers.

riscor.org still has a jobs opportunities section with jobs going at Acorn user. Should the page be culled or updated.....

Well, despite never having had a reply to any of the complaints I've sent to the BBC about the use of proprietary formats for streaming video on their website, perhaps someone was listening after all.
