Beta Printers, DOSFS released

Non-Iyonix users need not apply

Castle have this weekend released a couple of OS components for brave people to beta test. The software can be downloaded via Castle's online upgrade system and a "formal release will be made in due course".

Interestingly, Castle also state in the upgrade documentation that "support for any Iyonix PC issues will be dependent generally on all issued updates having been installed." This morning, some of the Iyonix users we spoke to were waiting for a stable release of the updated components, before installing them.

First up is DOSFS, which now supports long filenames and the Microsoft FAT32 disc format. It's still an image filesystem and is still limited to a 2GB disc image size, though.

Next is version 1.70 of !Printers. This release, according to Castle, features new printer definition files, several minor bug fixes, provides non-blocking IO when printing to a USB connected printer and also hopes to support more multi-function devices.

Finally, a 32bit version of RedrawManager is available from the RISC OS 5 website. Castle are also somewhat suffering at the hands of Smartgroups at the moment, as they can't post announcements to the Iyonix support mailing list.

I assume from yesterdays announcements, then, that these things will soon be available for RISC OS 4 owners, too.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what RedrawManager does? Is it a core RISC OS module or third-party support?

Hi DOSFS should be stable.. it has been well beta tested.. though I chose to let a few preview it before 'imposing' it on people via the update system.

Access for non iyonix users will follow later.

As for the 'support' issue .. that is standard wording in all iyonix updaters.

!Printers is less widely tested.. I dont have THAT many printers!!!!!

However, software is not generally posted if it has known issues seen in-house ..

so.. do try.. but be aware that if you actually find an issue, then you may wish to revert to what you had before .. isntalling using the updater provided will generally have made a backup of this...

Presumably this release of dosfs kills the need for Win95fs. Serves WSS right really for taking 18 months to produce the 32 bit version. I didn't buy my Iyonix until all of the 'essential' apps that I use were 32 bitted - WSS were the last!

BTW, I can't post to Smartgroups either - seems to be a global issue there.

To jeffd: Same here. WSS being so silent and taking so long to offer 32 bit versions resulted in me going for Aemulor Pro and not upgrading. Pity for WSS especially since their upgrade prices were pretty fair.

Well, I would not really want to run something as low-level as a filing system under emulation - despite the fact that AemulorPro is remarkably stable. I do not think it is not the purpose of AemulorPro to emulate software for which there is a 32-bit version. Due to things like the WimpSlot limitation Aemulor imposes on the rest of the system, even on the native 32-bit software I would not like to run it unless absolutely necessary.
