ROL decides on name changeBy Chris Williams. Published: 19th Oct 2004, 13:54:10 | Permalink | Printable
Nothing fancyRISCOS Ltd. is renaming itself to 'RISC OS Developments', following Friday's agreement with Castle.
ROL boss Paul Middleton commented that the new name sums up the company more appropriately, as they act as chief developers of desktop RISC OS. While companies such as Advantage Six remain as sub-licencees of RISCOS Ltd., Castle will focus more on non-desktop, embedded product areas. Paul confirmed that Select for Iyonix is on-going but will be made available eventually.
The domain riscos.com [mirror] will be handed back to Castle (as the owners of RISC OS), and eventually developed into a central site with resources and publicity information about RISC OS. A new website for RISC OS Developments has yet to be decided upon, however the post-agreement hand over period is described as being "considerable".
Way back in 1999, RISCOS Ltd was formed with the aim of continuing RISC OS development following the break up of Acorn Group. The end of the Acorn era was marked in 1998 by the announcement that the Group was pulling out of the desktop computer market and had canned their Pheobe "RiscPC2" computer.
RISCOS Ltd was then granted exclusive rights to the development and marketing of RISC OS for the desktop market, after Pace snapped up the IPR to RISC OS, reportedly for a quarter of a million quid. RISC OS 4 was first launched in July 1999 and its latest incarnation, Adjust32, was pre-announced earlier this month.
