Wimpbasic.org faces closure

Domain renewal headache

Wimpbasic logoJohn Peachey has said he will not be renewing wimpbasic.org, and is looking for someone to take over the site.

"The Wimpbasic domain has come up for renewal. With some regret, I have decided that support for Wimpbasic is no longer justified. This site will therefore disappear at the end of October 2004," writes John.

"In coming to this conclusion, I have considered the (minor) financial costs involved, and the future of the system. Unfortunately with further development unlikely in the forseeable future, I feel that it is not appropriate to continue a program that is not being actively developed, nor that will work on a 32bit machine natively."

Wimpbasic is an integrated development environment for producing desktop software, and a 26bit version is available commercially from APDL. Wimpbasic.org provides a host of resources and tutorials for developers using WimpBasic.

The RAD sector of the RISC OS market still needs to be filled. Gambas, a Unix-based Visual Basic clone is nearing it's 1.0 release. Although it uses QT and KDE by default, it's not written to support any perticular toolkit, it's just that's what the main author uses. It might be possible to do a native RISC OS version one. People with the time should get currying. :)

em2ac: The closest I'd say for RISC OS has now got to be our own WimpWorks: [link]

Although the lack of a really decent high-level language is one of the biggest problems to my mind... </hint> ;-)

Does any relatively complete list of the various RISC OS development environments exist? Personally I'd be interested in knowing all of the possibilities and how they compare.

There's something in the csa.programmer FAQ IIRC.

It seems to be a bit shallow for what you want. Perhaps something for Qercus to cover? Or I'm sure Drobe'd happily accept an article (or even a series) written by someone.

I'd be happy to supply a review copy of WimpWorks...

Jaffa:

Thanks for the link. As you say, it's not quite the same as a full comparison, but certainly very useful for highlighting what's out there.

I'll have to try out some of these creatures.
