Flash plugin, screensaver, Drobe awards and more

Round up motifWrap up warm and settle down with these recently released software updates.

John-Mark Bell of NetSurf fame has packaged up version 0.411.1.1 of the RISC OS Flash plugin, which is a port of the open source Flash plugin for Linux. The port, which can handle Flash 3 and some Flash 4 files, has been brought up to date with the mainstream version and benefited from a number of bug fixes - one of which increases the plugin's stability on 32bit RISC OS.

John-Mark has also 32bit'ed Kulture's popular Delirium screensaver and released it via sourceforge.net, as it's now open source.

RiscLua logoGavin Wraith has informed us that version 3.10 of RiscLua now includes an 'arbitrary precision maths library'. Gavin explains: "This means that version 3.10 has the efficiencies for the ARM that stem from an internal use of 32-bit integers (standard Lua uses doubles internally, by default; OK if your processor has fast FP routines) and also provides arbitrary precision arithmetic that should be good enough for teaching the pitfalls of numerical analysis."

Flowchart drafting app Graphite is now faster than previous versions, has a grid lock function and a style system. APDL have released a free update to spreadsheet package Schema2 - users are warned to only use the update on versions 1.10 or higher of 32bit Schema2. Harriet "sister of Chris" Bazley has added anti-aliased font support and numerous bug fixes to GNU diff frontend SideDiff.

Also, users of AAUGOnline.net should note that the RISC OS friendly ISP's dialup phone number has changed. If you're an AAUGOnline user and weren't aware of the change then you probably can't read this - in which case, your mother smells of Elderberries.

drobe logoAnd finally
This year we're determined to run the Drobe RISC OS Awards for 2004, to recognise those who've made this platform worth using this year. We'll announce the nominations on the December 10th so people can log in and vote in each category and the winners will be duly announced on New Year's Eve. We've already drawn up an initial list of nominations, but in case we've missed anything, drop us an email if you fear we've left you out or you want to recommend something or someone, or if you have any other thoughts or flames.

The category list is 'Best commercial software', 'Best non-commercial software', 'Best RISC OS hardware product', 'Best general contribution to the platform', 'Best RISC OS related website' (Drobe's excluded, naturally), 'Best RISC OS zealot/advocate', 'Top own goal' (things that went wrong), and finally, 'Best death match pair'.

I think that 'Harriet' is *sister* to Chris.

*ahem*Netsruf*ahem* Okay, maybe I'm a little early, but it's certainly changed the way I use my RPC, like I actually use the internet on it now!

Question for the developers really, but I wonder if Netsurf is at all portable? The Psion browers are looking a little aged these days (and are no longer being developed).

Yes; there is a GTK version. I don't know if there's a GTK port to EPOC. Of course, you could put Linux on your Psion and run Firefox :p

Cor. Is this GTK running under RISC OS, or GTK running under another OS? I'd quite like to play around with a Linux version of it.

"Get currying". The GTK2 port for RISC OS isn't really mature yet.

rjek: GTK under Lunix (though there's no real reason why it wouldn't work with any other OS that has a GTK port). The closest I've come to actually running it under RISC OS is via xnest.

Be warned, however, that the GTK UI needs a fair amount of work to turn it into something sensibly usable.

jmb: It'd let people play around with the rendering engine, though. Is it available through the normal CVS means?
