Dmoz RISC OS section needs rescuingBy Chris Williams. Published: 14th Dec 2004, 16:18:09 | Permalink | Printable
Won't somebody please think of the links? The RISC OS section of dmoz.org is in need of new editors, says former maintainer Andy Harmsworth.
Dmoz is an 'open directory' that predates today's Wikis, and allows a large team of volunteer editors to categorise and manage an online database of links to useful websites. The RISC OS category includes links to software developers, dealers, user groups and documentation but is rapidly becoming out of date. At one point, the RISC OS category was larger than the Apple section.
According to the Dmoz project, people should start by managing category sub-sections, and apply to manage a larger section once they've gained enough experience. Andy was once a dmoz editor for the RISC OS section, but after three months of inactivity, he was stripped of his position - although he is applying to be reinstated.
Given the rise of new links websites for RISC OS, including one or two Wiki based ones, and the power of modern search engines, we asked Andy how useful dmoz.org is. He replied: "The fact remains that Google (and others) still use the dmoz directory as part of their ranking, so having things listed properly has got to be helpful.
"To keep it up to date, you simply use an online editing system that is very easy to use. It tells you when links are dead, so it would be easy if someone wanted to do it."
