Warning: Contains gory photos of electronicsRico Naf has sent us further details of his DIY laptop, made from a ripped up RiscPC. Rico's portable project won Best Show of Ingenuity of 2004, in a poll of drobe.co.uk readers.
Rico, a Swiss RISC OS user, lists component prices and other details on the web page devoted to his efforts. It wasn't his intention to build a home made laptop at first, but the engineer grew tired of "all the attempts from commercial companies and their excuses".
Describing his project, he says: "The PSU is a switching step down regulator for 5V and a step up for 12V - that's for the motherboard and hard disc. The LCD has its own PSU built in. The charger is made up from four LM317 regulators. It's a bit tricky to explain: basically it consists of two charger modules working in parallel with a by-pass regulator, so that when the unit is operating, it can charge and feed the PSU at the same time."
Rico adds that he carries his RiscPC to and from his workshop every day, but hasn't had a chance to try it out properly in the wilderness yet, as it's a bit nippy where he lives.
