On fellow RISC OS news site Acornarcade, an article has begun to kick up a stir amongst RISC OS companies. The article, written by Tim Fountain with Rich Goodwin and Musus Umbra of Angband fame, is subtlely titled 'How lack of advertising is still stifling RISC OS' and hits out at RISC OS developers and publishers who rely solely on ugly usenet to announce their products. This is a feeling shared amongst the majority of the RISC OS news site, the blatent disregard by some developers to publically broadcast any product news.
"PC games sites on the same scale as Acornarcade get companies haggling for space on their news pages", comments Tim. "..There is news out there, a lot of people just don't get to see it." The usual excuse 'Oh, we didn't want to hype it or make promises we might not fulfil' is stamped on repeatedly like the poisonous spider it is. Tim also doesn't forget to drop the issue of review copies, (and the lack of), in to the discussion.
The article then proceeds to name and shame a few companies and adds a little sarcasm here and there for effect; you really experience the frustration felt by the iconbar.com and acornarcade editor. In the comments forum at the end of the article, a number of developers surprisingly own up and promise to amend their ways. Needless to say, the Drobe news editor has included his own comment.
While Tim's article is seen as a little harsh by some RISC OS publishers, it is in fact all true sadly enough. While a fair amount of developers are more than happy to talk to news sites like Drobe and other rivals, the rest resort to nasty things like usenet postings, which are usually rushed or bias; we will not mention the response we usually get from emails sent to these developers. The Drobe editors believe RISC OS users want more than just numbers or comments from publishers like 'The ImagewizardPro+ is the best video editor for RISC OS'. We know you want products to be investigated, their authors talked to and futher information presented. RISC OS users are thinking with their browsers these days and they demand more than ever from the multitude of developers out there.
