Software news in brief

Mkdosfs, design and graphics apps and freeware updates

News in briefRichard Spencer has attempted a port of mkdosfs, a utility that creates FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems as DOSDisc files. Richard says he's keen to produce a solution to the problem of handling FAT formatted USB storage devices on RISC OS. He told us: "The motivation for porting the tool was partly reading the recent thread on comp.sys.acorn.hardware where it was discussed that the only way to reliably reformat a USB FAT16 device is to use Linux or Win98SE."

At the moment, he's not having much luck getting the software to work with the Castle and Simtec USB stacks, so if you'd like to help out, drop Richard an email from his website.

Version 9a of technical drawing package RiscCAD is being readied for a release in time for Wakefield 2005. In the meantime, you can try out a new demo version from the RiscCAD website. According to developer David Buck, new features include isometric circles, 'on-the-fly' grid snapping, improved hatching and patterning, and compatibility with Richard Hallas' SpecialFX.

Jonathan Marten has freely published drawing applications Vector, GridPro and DrawPlus on his website, along with the original source code albeit with a restricted open source-ish licence, although he promises to GPL it at some point. It's expected that someone will be able to produce a 32 bit version of these golden oldies and rumour has it the Aemulor team already have.

A new beta version of software development tool AppBasic is now out. Version 5.01 of Ray Favre's label printing utility LaBella is available for download, with various "major" new enhancements. Kevin Edwards has released a new version of accounting software Account2, now with various improvements and bug fixes. Jon Ripley has crafted a LOGO implementation in an impressive 250 bytes of BASIC. A software news roundup wouldn't be complete without an update to picture gallery generating Thumbcat, which has better printing support and a searchable database.

We'll put out the 32-bit versions of Jonathan's software as soon as we get permission.

The on-the-fly snap on RiscCAD 9a is for all snaps, not just grid snap.

Great news, Adrian!

What would be fantastic next is a proper release of a 32-bit S-Base so that we can have an Iyonix-friendly Citation ([link]). Anyone know anything about the likelihood of that happening?

Richard Spencer's website has no mention of mkdosfs, or a contact address (although it shouldn't be too difficult to work out...)

Has it been withdrawn? I'd be very interested if it could allow me to use an external USB 2.0 hard drive as a backup device.
