RISC OS 3 audio tapes preserved in MP3

By Chris Williams. Published: 8th Jun 2005, 11:34:04 | Permalink | Printable

We're gonna party like it's 1992

Acorn logoThe audio tapes produced by Acorn to guide new users on how to master RISC OS are now available as MP3s from here. Simon Pyatt and Xenakis Serghi have encoded all four tapes in digital audio format - that's around 2 hours of easy listening and Acorn nostalgia with some typical early 1990s keyboard synth thrown in for good measure.

The tapes were supplied with RISC OS 3, in the early 1990s, in the days of the A5000, A4000, and A30x0, when Acorn thought it still had a chance in the home market. Given that the RISC OS user interface hasn't significantly changed in 13 years (for various good reasons), a lot of the information in the audio guide is still fairly relevant today - such as using the Filer, resizing windows, understanding the three button mouse and so on. The MP3s could otherwise be useful for people picking up old kit and wondering how on earth it works.

From the start of the audio guide: "These tape and disc materials have been designed to give you a clear insight into how your new Acorn computer works, but above all, we want to put you into the driving seat from the start. By the end, you'll have tried everything out by yourself and you'll be well on the way to using your Acorn computer the way the experts use it.

"If you're used to using a computer, you'll finish in no time at all and you'll quickly see what makes your Acorn computer so much more advanced than more traditional systems."

Who said Acorn had lousey PR?

When I first listened to these tapes I thought they were cheesey as hell. That was a lot of years ago when I bought an A3010.

I applaud the efforts of Simon Pyatt and Xenakis Serghi in preserving these tapes, because they are a part of Acorn culture that should not be allowed to fall by the wayside.

Excellent. Thanks for these.

Does anyone have a digital copy of the video that came in the A3000 learning curve pack? I'd like to see it again for nostalgic reasons - I remember that recognisable chap who I can't remember the name of (!) setting up an A3000, and then a family playing with !Maestro and !Lander and stuff!

i remember the tapes from when I got my RISC OS 3.1 ROM upgrade. I believe the tape was included in the corrugated box. I only listened to it once, I dont think I even got to the end, I knew too much by then already.

Fantastic to have them resurrected though! Nice one.

Hmm, shame this has been on iconbar.com for the last two years along with scans of the tapes and inlays..

OK, the comments system fudged that URL :)

Why has Andy been modded down? Surely pointing out an alternative source of the tapes is entirely "on topic"?

Incidentally, there are some even lower quality (4MB per file) copies of the tapes available at [link]

Might be useful for people still stuck on dialup connections :)

I have another Acorn tape from 1992 called "News Update" which advertises the A3000 Learning Curve. It has special offers for Eureka, Impression, easiwriter and Artworks. I wonder if they are still valid ;-)

Also there a special LOW RATE Finance offer for the A3000 LC colour system + printer @ 2075 (inc. VAT) and people complain the Iyonix is too expensive.

I wonder if I'll ever work out this comments system... It seems three comments have been completely removed from history!

I have the video, might digitise it, depending on the legalities of it Came with our A3000 presented by the bloke on the Me and my micro book (for the bbc)

Blimey - I wonder who makes up the rules regarding censorship on Drobe? That's at least 4 comments removed now. (I suspect this one will make 5!)

I thought on or two comments had been removed, then decided had imagined it. Apparently not.

Well, that's at least 5 comments deleted by drobe now. I wonder if they might deign to give some explanation? (I realise comments complaining about the comments system are OT, but that wasn't the case for the original censorship of Andrew Duffell.)

Drobe - what's the point in your moderation system if you just remove posts you don't like anyway?

Cool, I always thought this was the best way ever to introduce new users to a GUI. I might produce an up to date German version of these tapes (on CD obviously), since I'm working in a sound recording studio ATM.

The chappy in the video is Fred Harris, he used to present the various BBC Micro proggys along with Ian McNaught-Davis. Ahh, the memories.

Hopefully your voice isn't as boring as the guy's on this tape! I'm almost brain-dead after listening to it for 4 minutes.

Who was the man who presented Micro Live? I still have the RO3.1 tapes - they were very useful. A decent, comprehensive package which could ease new users onto the platform. Not only the tapes and a (surely essential for any computer?) Welcome Guide but also a comprehensive User&Application guide. The last comprehensive version AFAIK was the HTML one provided with RISC OS3.7 (and on RO4 RiscPCs). These are crucial if you are to get full use of Paint and Draw for example. Otherwise the tendency must be to let them linger not realising what they are capable of.

I'll see if I can cap the A3000 welcome tape soon - I've presently got my VCR plugged into the computer so can make a low-res copy.
