RISC OS 3 audio tapes preserved in MP3 By Chris Williams. Published: 8th Jun 2005, 11:34:04 | Permalink | PrintableWe're gonna party like it's 1992 The audio tapes produced by Acorn to guide new users on how to master RISC OS are now available as MP3s from here. Simon Pyatt and Xenakis Serghi have encoded all four tapes in digital audio format - that's around 2 hours of easy listening and Acorn nostalgia with some typical early 1990s keyboard synth thrown in for good measure.
The tapes were supplied with RISC OS 3, in the early 1990s, in the days of the A5000, A4000, and A30x0, when Acorn thought it still had a chance in the home market. Given that the RISC OS user interface hasn't significantly changed in 13 years (for various good reasons), a lot of the information in the audio guide is still fairly relevant today - such as using the Filer, resizing windows, understanding the three button mouse and so on. The MP3s could otherwise be useful for people picking up old kit and wondering how on earth it works.
From the start of the audio guide: "These tape and disc materials have been designed to give you a clear insight into how your new Acorn computer works, but above all, we want to put you into the driving seat from the start. By the end, you'll have tried everything out by yourself and you'll be well on the way to using your Acorn computer the way the experts use it.
"If you're used to using a computer, you'll finish in no time at all and you'll quickly see what makes your Acorn computer so much more advanced than more traditional systems."
Who said Acorn had lousey PR?
