Companies flock to Christmas road show

But no tour bus or groupies in sight

A little car on a mapNext month's RISC OS road show has moved up a gear, now that a healthy list of dealers and developers attending has been confirmed. Over a dozen companies regularly seen at larger shows have signed up for the ambitious plan to exhibit at three intimate venues around England. The Manchester location currently looks to be the hottest, pulling the concentration of RISC OS activity away from the south of the UK.

RISCOS Ltd. boss Paul Middleton, who masterminded the event at the end of October, said, "The RISC ,OS Christmas Roadshow is reviving the old Acorn spirit with a trip round the country, without a double decker bus. This will be your chance to get those last minute presents and bargains just a week before Christmas."

Below is a table of attendance per company; green is for yes, red is for no.

RISCOS Ltd. hope to use the road show to extend their userbase of 500 Adjust users and 6400 RISC OS 4 users. AdvantageSix will be bringing along varients in the A9 range. Archive are planning to add more booklets to their recently announced range of titles. Icon will be selling ArtWorks for MW Software at the London event. Other exhibitors will be bringing along their usual products and hopefully some Christmas special offers.

The road show will begin on Thursday 15th December at the West Bromwich Albion Football Club, near Birmingham, West Midlands, with doors open between 4pm and 8pm. The gang then move to the Brittania Hotel Stockport, near Manchester, Chesire, from 4pm to 8pm. Then those remaining will roll into Best Western Cumberland Hotel, near London, Middlesex, with doors open between 11am and 3pm.

It's great to see that, given the short time-frame, so many people have come on board.

If I was new to RISC OS, or a former user on the search for inspiration, the thing I would be looking for is demonstrations of RISC OS "at its best". In other words, I'd want to know what the elixir of the operating system was.

Software developers like Icon Technology, MW Software and Mathmagical Software can demonstrate specific tasks that can be performed under RISC OS with their high-quality, actively developed and vibrant software. It really is a shame that there won't be more similar software developers on the roadshow.

It would be nice to see more software developers on show.

It may be interesting to see just how much more the user base numbers grow from all this effort.

I suppose the London venue is suffering from the proximity of the SE Show; the support for it is noticeably worse than for the other venues.

We're entertaing guests that week, so it was difficult to schedule more than 2 of the shows without seeming like bad hosts. As it is, we may be asking our guests to help out!

bucksboy: I would suggest that the main reason why fewer exhibitors are attending the London venue is because far more of them are based in the north and so distance is the primary factor. In fact, I know this to be the case with three of them that I've spoken to.

so those in the North won't come down to the "smoke", but one from the south coast will venture "north of Watford" (gap). Perhaps accomodation is more expensive in London (no perhaps about it, really).

Ah, but you don't need to stay London, Paul Middleton and I are staying in Birmingham for the Thursday and Friday nights and plan on being at home for the Saturday night:-)

Or perhaps it's because going to London is suffering, and leaving it is a relief (not that Stockport is any better, but at least it's nearer to places that are!)

Unfortunately I'm going to have to give them all a miss, despite working near Stockport, due to family turning up and making a nuisance that evening.

The real question about the road show is; will it be just more bluster from Paul Middleton about about supposed new features, or are they going to actually deliver something to their subscribers who have been WAITING FOR OVER 18 MONTHS.

Have you noticed how we've never seen Druck and Jeremy Paxman in the same room together? I think they're the same person! :)

Miles off topic this link, but have a look at the MediaPlayer (if you have access to one) on this web page at the top right hand side....

Two young Chinese boys dressed in red Adidas sports tops and singing in what appears to be an internet shop in Shanghai.

I got it from my Skype internet phone's Chinese "Skype Me" list.

The next contestants for the 2006 "Chinese Idol"?

My children could not stop laughing at these characters mime their song as we watched it.
