RISCOS.org joins pixel ad bandwagonBy Chris Williams. Published: 19th Jan 2006, 01:30:50 | Permalink | Printable
If it works for a penniless uni student, it can work for ROSLeaping onto the recent advertising craze where pixels of a website are sold off to advertisers, Paul Vigay is shamelessly flogging space on his riscos.org website. 50 quid will buy you a 10 by 10 pixel square that links to your own website, the aim being to build up enough pixels to create a suitable advert banner or eye catching image on the currently empty grid. Inspired by the original 'Million Dollar Homepage', Paul hopes to plough cash raised into future RISC OS related developments.
If all the squares are bought up, Paul could net £100000, although it is still very early days at the moment. Advertisers can be RISC OS companies, or private individuals and websites that cater for other users of the platform.
Paul said: "I could fund worthy software applications that perhaps deserve a bit more time than part-time hobby projects. If shareware authors thought they could make a worthwhile amount of money from something, then we might get some new applications being developed.
"Alternatively, perhaps tempt some past developers back to RISC OS, such as the guys who wrote TopModel2 or something. I'll see how it goes. Of course, it might be a flop and no one is interested - but at least I've tried."
Paul also suggested that selling off the grid space could be a way to funnel money into code ransom-style projects. Meanwhile the Million Dollar Homepage is currently suffering at the hands of its success, after being knocked offline for a week by the Internet's version of protection racketers.
