RISC OS 5.11 released

By Chris Williams. Published: 20th Feb 2006, 23:22:39 | Permalink | Printable

Couple of bug fixes for Iyonix users

Castle logoA new version of RISC OS 5 is today available via Castle's Internet based update distribution software. RISC OS 5.11 contains bug fixes to the Iyonix's ethernet networking driver, EtherK, to address a fault with stalling connections - as seen occasionally in ShareFS. The USB stack has been tweaked to support USB radio projects and similar software. The RISC OS Flash ROM image was also built using optimisations included in the latest publically available version of the Norcroft C/C++ compiler, as sold by Castle.

RISC OS 5.11 is a stable release, unlike its earlier cousin 5.10, which saw the introduction of improved Nvidia card handling during the start up of the computer.

Update at 22:38 22/2/2006
A third version of RISC OS 5.11 has been issued within days of the initial release. The updates fix a Window Manager bug and a fault with USB scanners, as reported by users who upgraded to 5.11.

At last night's ROUGOL meeting the Iyonix being used for the demo had to be reflashed back to 5.10 because FTPc didn't work on 5.11. This made demoing the uploading of a website a bit tricky!

Well I just tried Colin Granville's FTPc version 1.41 on my 5.11 enabled Iyonix and it works OK both downloading and uploading files. I have the ROL Toolbox items installed as standard.

Non-stalling ShareFS comes after I had a wonderful time chucking a few GB worth of files over it :-(

What happened there? "In reply to Non:"? Bug or me making a strange typo?

Bluenose: Well that's good news. Should have known it would just be Keith's machine that was screwy! (again :-)

Perhaps you want to make sure you have Release 2 of the 5.11 ROM.

we can confirm that the issue reported by helpful has been sorted with rel2 of the ROM :-D

We had it downloaded & installed within minutes of it being released and within minutes of needing to get to the meeting.

Using a phrase from all test engineers "seems to OK now..."

With the Iyonix mailing list in trouble because of a Smartgroups problem, feedback on 5.11 is a bit difficult. However, a number of us are suffering from scanner freezing after the upgrade; interestingly, this is exactly the same problem that a fellow ROUGOL member gets with 5.10. I've had to revert to 5.10.

In reply to charles: There is now a release 3 of the 5.11 ROM available from [link] which states: "The current ROM image is RISC OS 5.11 release3, released 22/2/06."

D'oh! Had I read the article again instead of just jumping in to the comments, I would have seen that it has been edited to reflect the release of version 3. However, because of the SmartGroups problems, no-one appears to have commented on my problem with the upgrade to 5.11 - when setting the mouse speed using configure, the pointer freezes on clicking on "Set". :-(

BrianH: I've not seen your post on SmartGroups yet. Are you using HID though? I get the same problem here, but hitting F12 and then *RMReinit USBHID sets the mouse pointer free again, so it could be an incompatibility (I think HID has suffered from problems with new ROM upgrades in the past, but a new version was always been released very quickly to resolve it).

I've got !HID version 0.36 , RISCOS5.11 Rlse3 and ROL's Toolbox items installed and I've just changed the mouse speed and it works OK. I have Mouse type set to Alternative as suggested when I had previous problems.

bluenose: Changing from 'USB' to 'Alternative USB' fixes the problem here. Thanks! :)

In reply to bluenose: The SmartGroups mail server has burst in to life, with about 60 or 70 emails coming in. Some have suggested this fix, so I'll try that when I get home later. ;)
