Heavy duty A3 scanner and printer tested on ROSBy Chris Williams. Published: 17th Apr 2006, 17:46:39 | Permalink | Printable
CJE says it works, users double check price tagCJE Micros have successfully tested a business class A3 colour laser printer and A3 scanner with RISC OS. The HP 5550n printer is designed to handle large workloads at high speed with a good quality output. Meanwhile, the Epson GT-15000 scanner is aimed at companies and educational institutions, and offers high speed scanning with near instant warm up time. Neither of these products come cheap, however.
Chris Evans of CJE said: "The printer was tested for compatibility using existing RISC OS drivers, and it worked, but who would buy one on the off chance to do the same?
"Fortunately we had customers who wanted to use them in mixed Windows and RISC OS environments, and were willing to take the risk that they may not work on RISC OS. For the printer we then did the necessary work to enable tray selection - which we can enhance to duplex options for other HP A3 lasers with that functionality."
The Epson scanner includes USB and SCSI connectors, and is bundled with a suitable RISC OS Twain driver. The HP printer offers parallel port, USB and ethernet ports to connect to a computer or print server.
Chris added: "Dave Pilling's Twain driver needed some minor work for the scanner, which I did.
"Regarding the A3 Canon i6500 inkjet that we also recently announced, our Canon driver worked straight away for A4 printing. However, to get A3 printing working took the best part of a week's work, which fortunatly a RISC OS business user who needed one paid a significant amount towards. At the same time it showed up a bug in PrintEdit when dealing with initialisation strings, but I found a way around it."

RISC OS artist wows public with digital artwork
A RISC OS-using artist has described exhibiting his digitally-created work in a public gallery as a "rewarding experience". Richard Ashbery, who used ArtWorks and Photodesk to create his images, showed off patterns and colourful illustrations to punters, who told him his work made a change from the oils and watercolour masterpieces usually exhibited.
