Beta Castle C compiler releasedBy Chris Williams. Published: 24th Apr 2006, 02:03:43 | Permalink | Printable
Second round of beta testing, subscriptions nearing endAnother pre-release version of the Castle C compiler was made available this evening to programmers. Users who subscribed to Castle's annual tools scheme were able to login to the Iyonix website tonight and download version 5.65 of the 'cc' program, used to build software written in C. Labeled as beta, the update hopes to address two reported faults concerning 64bit number support and the storage of data in an application.
People downloading the software were told the update has been "extensively tested, including building the Iyonix's and other's ROMs. CC version 5.65 fixes an issue with long long that was reported, and also a couple of other matters".
The compiler subscription scheme is now into the end of its second year, having started in April 2004. A second round of upgrades, version 5.61, were released in May 2005. Another beta release took place at the start of February this year; version 5.64 reportedly included various boosts for code generated by the package, supported tuning software for the XScale processor, and several other technical tweaks, improvements and bug fixes - some benchmarks have been posted here.
Castle's John Ballance told Iyonix owners today: "CC 5.65 beta is available to those of you who have second year C Tools subscriptions. This fixes two specific issues reported back by Thomas Milius - a long long issue, and a packed structure issue."
The new compiler program declares itself as 'Norcroft RISC OS ARM C vsn 5.65 [18 Apr 2006]'. Castle inherited the development package from Acorn, when it was known as the Norcroft suite.
