Iyonix support list dumps SmartgroupsBy Chris Williams. Published: 3rd May 2006, 01:16:56 | Permalink | Printable
New provider makes postings public for allThe official Iyonix support mailing list has moved to freelists.org after Castle ditched fault riddled Smartgroups. The change in provider means future discussions on the mailing list will be open for the whole world to read, whereas previously messages were kept private to Iyonix owners only.
The mailing list provides a direct line to Castle and fellow Iyonix users for punters facing problems with RISC OS 5 and their hardware. Castle staff are known to post Iyonix related news to the list, bypassing the usual announcement channels. The busy list also carries advice and solutions from users, and a search is now on to find a new home to store the past mailing list archives. Past message archives remain locked away on the Smartgroups website.
Castle's John Ballance told users this evening: "Please note that the group archives on freelists.org are open to all viewers, though email addresses are 'masked'.
"Please take care with any sensitive postings and be aware that others could now see them, whereas in Smartgroups, the archives are private to the group."
RISC OS mailing lists hosted by Smartgroups, including RISCOS Ltd's Select support list, have suffered from lost or delayed postings for a number of weeks. The Wanadoo owned company acknowledged there were faults affecting the mailing lists it provides.
A Smartgroups spokesperson said: "We are sorry that some members are experiencing email delays of up to seven days. We are seeking a solution but in the meantime if you are experiencing long delays please note you will be able to view messages on the Smartgroups website."
• The Messenger mailing list opened its archives at the start of April. Lead developer Mark Sawle emailed subscribers with details on how to opt out of appearing in the public archives.
