Chuckie Egg returns as 32bit compatible

Definitive 8bit game moves to 32bit

Chuckie Egg screenshotWhen teenager Nigel Alderton first drew up the plans for Chuckie Egg in 1983, he may not have anticipated that his creation would still be played 23 years later. The lurid coloured platform game was set to be a classic, and its publisher eventually shipped over a million copies. Now in 2006, it can be played on the latest descendants of the Acorn Electron, the Iyonix and A9home.

Michael Foot first produced a faithful conversion of Chuckie Egg, and has now turned around a 32bit compatible version of the game. Alan Buckley, of libSDL port fame, also worked on the code to allow it to run in the Iyonix's high resolution screen modes and added anti-aliased font support.

Michael said: "The conversion process takes the original BBC game code and converts each processor instruction to a comparable routine under RISC OS.

"This means that instead of having to rewrite the game from scratch and trying to get everything the same, I now have an exact conversion that looks, plays and feels the same as the original."

The 32bit safe Chuckie Egg is available from Michael's website. He has previously converted other BBC Acorn classics, such as Dare Devil Dennis and Guardian.

Runs fine at 1280x1024 on Iyonix here. Great nostalgia trip but a bit of a shock seeing those nice vector fonts on somehting that has no right to be anything but blocky.

Good job guys, dare we look forward to some more classics? Aviator, anybody?

Nostalgia indeed! Great fun!

I too would love to see more like this. Hmmm... Pengo (H. Soft) is still one of my favourites. It'd be wonderful to have that. And how about 'The Sentinel' and 'Firetrack'?

By the way, does anyone know how Advantage6 got Zarch running on the A9home? Was it via Aemulor emulation? And was it Zarch or Lander? Hmmm... Now I'm longing to play Conqueror again. Only I'm too busy with Chuckie Egg ;-)

Those "nice vector fonts" can be removed by changing the RetroFont setting in the !Config file. Setting RetroFont=1 will revert Chuckie back to the orginal look.

I would love to see Zarch running at 1280x1024 :-) Being a vector based game it should really be able to use that extra resolution. I wonder if anyone still has the source code?

In reply to Footie: That wasn't a complaint about the vector fonts - I think it's a great nod to modernity.

And Stewy - I'd quite forgotten Conqueror, great game. Now it's sitting here on the shelf (next to Lemmings and Zarch - really). I might just have to fire up Aemulor and hope for the best :-)
