Samsung laser printer drivers in beta By Chris Williams. Published: 28th May 2006, 14:53:50 | Permalink | PrintableStep right up folks, step right up [Updated] Users of Samsung laser printers have been asked to take part in a beta-testing trial of some new RISC OS drivers. Martin Wuerthner has been tinkering with postscript and PDF authoring package Ghostscript to drive printers, and has found he can use this work to control certain Samsung and Lexmark printers.
The supported printers are the Samsung ML-200, ML-210, ML-1000, ML-1200, ML-1210, ML-1220, ML-4500, ML-5080, ML-6040, ML-2010, and similar, or the Lexmark E210. Interested punters should drop Martin an email using the address given in the link below.
Martin said: "I have just created a printer driver framework for RISC OS that uses Ghostscript transparently to drive printers.
"One of the more interesting applications of this development is that it allows a range of cheap - so-called 'GDI' - Samsung laser printers to be driven."
Martin is also on the look out for users with colour laser printers that understand the PCL 6 or PCL-XL language, used to represent documents.
Update at 23:00 3/6/2006
The printer driver work will be released as freeware but with users asked to make a voluntary financial contribution to the software's development - much like GView.
Martin added: "It may well turn out that the colour laser support (PCL6) is far more exciting than supporting a few black and white Samsung printers.
"There are lots of black and white lasers out there that RISC OS supports well but, to the best of my knowledge, there are no colour lasers RISC OS can drive except the more expensive ones that support PostScript."
