NetSurf reshuffles email lists Published: 18th Jun 2006, 00:39:52 | Permalink | PrintableCookie support to be available again within coming weeks  The team behind the open source web browser NetSurf have reshuffled the software's support mailing lists. A new discussion group for programmers contributing to the browser has opened, called netsurf-dev.
Another new list, netsurf-translators, has been created to organise the translation of the software into languages other than English.
NetSurf contributor Michael Drake said: "If you would like to help translate NetSurf, please join the new mailing list. It will be used provide details on any changes that are made to NetSurf's user interface, web site and documentation.
"It is also for any other discussion of NetSurf translation, for example, how to edit the UTF-8 Messages files. Any translated files should be sent to me."
The existing netsurf-develop has become a general end user support mailing list for people testing the bleeding-edge builds of NetSurf, hot off the autobuilder.
Meanwhile, cookie support in the web browser is on the road to recovery after it was made unavailable earlier this year. Users need to use cookies to log into their favourite websites. Developer John-Mark Bell said he needed to finish persistent cookies, unverified transactions and a user interface, in that order.
Persistent cookies are usually little bits of information or some kind of identifying tag that remains on your computer after you've quit your web browser. They are, for example, used by websites to remember your settings when you revisit them, because they allow the visitor to be recognised. NetSurf has not previously supported 'unverified transactions', which allows the user to block cookies sneaked in from websites not directly visited, and the user interface will enable punters to manage the cookies kept on their computers.
John-Mark said: "Cookies work fine now, but aren't preserved over sessions. We've never supported unverifiable transactions, so there's no regression there and we've never had a user interface, either. With any luck, it'll be finished next week."
The on-going cookie development is housed in a source code repository out of reach from the public autobuilder.
In April, plans to make NetSurf available for platforms other than RISC OS were unveiled by developers Daniel Silverstone and Rob Kendrick.
