GCC logoDevelopers using GCC 3 to build their software were urged this week to upgrade to the latest version, namely GCC 3.4.6 release 2. There a number of tweaks and updates in this new release, with faults in the compiler, assembler, UnixLib, linker, and other components addressed.

GCCSDK official John Tytgat said: "GCCSDK GCC 3.4.6 Release 2 is an interim bug fix release for the 3.4.6 Release 1 we did three months ago. We strongly recommend all GCCSDK users to update to this version."

GCCSDK is a free, open source port of the GCC C/C++ and Fortran development tools to RISC OS. It can also be used to cross-compile RISC OS applications and modules from Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Cygwin on Windows, and Mac OS X.

What are the chances of merging the AOF and ELF toolchains and making the output type an option? This would ensure the ELF version doesn't lag behind the main version.

The plan is (and always has been) to go for GCC 4.x as next major GCCSDK release which would then have ELF support. Nick Burrett did already a lot of work in this area quite some time ago and it is up to us to integrate this in a recent GCC 4.x release. As far as I see things, for dynamic loading ELF binaries on RISC OS we could use Lee Noar's code as a start point.

I don't think it is the best investment of time to integrated Lee's ELF support in the GCCSDK 3.4.6 branch and get that out. It will only delay a GCC 4.x based release and there is already such a release out for those who want to use it.
