South East 2006 show videos

Theatre presentations on Drobe TV aka Google Video

Following the talks given at this month's South East RISC OS show in Guildford, Surrey, Leo White has kindly uploaded the video recordings he made of the theatre presentations. If you have a web browser with a recent version of Flash installed, you can go watch them now on Google Video from the links below.

The three pieces, which cover RISCOS Ltd, Castle, RISC OS Open and RISC OS Now, are fairly good quality, and it's pretty clear what the speakers are saying. Click on a thumbnail to jump to the full clip.

	The RISCOS Ltd presentation. 55 minutes of ROL boss Paul Middleton talking about Select, the 32bitting process, RISC OS 6 and taking questions from the audience.
	The Castle and RISC OS Open presentation. 42 minutes of Castle boss Jack Lillingston and ROS Open's Steve Revill talking about the "restructuring of Castle", the Iyonix range of computers, 'open sourcing' RISC OS, and taking questions from the audience.
	*The RISC OS Now* presentation.** 20 minutes of editor Louie Smith talking about her new magazine, what's in it, who's it for, and so on.

Just tried to access using Oregano2 - no dice, 'Flash 7 required'. Does O3 work?

Its great to be able to see the presentations for those of us stuck on the stands during the show. Google video wont work on RISC OS I'm afraid...

...so if you can only get away with watching one video at work this year, make it Louie's

There's a conspiracy going on which I haven't quite worked out yet. I finally decide to buy a laptop so that I can watch such things as videos and I get half way through Paul Middleton's presentation and the laptop crashes and resets itself - spooky

bucksboy: No, it doesn't work on O3, it could be made to work is someone provides a H263 video decoder and cash.

Glad you found them useful. Unfortunatly I didn't record the other presentations as I headed into town to do some shopping (and find lunch).

The flash side of things seems to work in Oregano 3, but all it ends up doing is downloading each chunk of the video, finds out it doesn't support that video format, and then throws it away and fetches the next section. So until someone makes/ports the appropiate codec to RISC OS its unlikely that its going to be working any time soon.

Apparently if you download the iPod/PSP version of the video then that can be viewed in Cinerama on RISC OS. If you have a copy of Cinerama of course.

The real reason for using Google Videos is that they let me upload the 2.25 GB of videos without any complaints. Most other places had limits on either video length (10 mins) or file size (100MB), and I don't think hosting them over my ADSL connection would have been viable.

I did try running the files through ffmpeg on my Linux box, but it kept crashing whilst processing the files.

Also I'd hate to think how long it would take my Kinetic RPC to grind its way through over 2GB of files.

A bit of an irony that the videos cannot be viewed on the platform they're addressing, but nevertheless very positive news for those who couldn't be present at the event. I'm especially curious what's been said about the RO Six and ROOL 'shared source' developments.

Now I have to convince a friend to let me watch them at his place without relieving him of his beer again... not to mention the usual RO rant

Would love to "try" watching them with Cinerama or Oregano3 any idea how I could do that before either me or my Iyonix etc dies? I missed one talk at the show and have now watched the Castle and RISC OS Open presentation (here at work) and found it very interesting I wish them well and thanks Leo for doing all this.

The castle/rool talk was very intresting. Except for the first ten minutes which I skipped. Perhaps we should start are own video site like youtube, but with avi's playable in replay. The mountain should come to mohammed or something like that ! ( I'm horrible with figure speech)

Is there a route into an existing Replay CODEC from any "modern" video format? Preferably one that does not need some expensive/rare/26-bit only piece of hardware.

I know that wouldn't solve the hosting problem but we might find some helpful RO-friendly site to do that - the bandwidth demands for Replay would, sadly, not be high after all.

I have a pristine copy of the Replay Starter Kit here but it's all so horribly dated - it assumes analogue video cameras through dedicated podules. If we had an importer front-end (in software) we could consume video captured (or transcoded) using other systems (like a DV camera through a Mac or whatever).

If they can be converted to a RISC OS friendly format, and have the file sizes greatly reduced, then I'd happily put them on riscository.com. With the file sizes brought down to something considerably more managable, I don't think there would be a bandwidth problem given the size of the RISC OS Community (sadly).

TonyStill: There was, WSS's !MovieFS which presented a foreign format video file as an image filing system containing a Replay movie, and a set of codecs to go in !ARMoive in order to play them. Unfortunately the PC world moved away from primitive but freely available codecs to complex closed source ones from Intel, Microsoft and Apple carrying substantial license fees, which made the product non viable.

But does anybody know how to make a replay playable movie these days ?Is it just a regular avi with some really oldschool specs or is the codec something completely different? Druck I think you're a bit wrong about the closed sourced codecs. Quicktime has been around since the dawn of time!

highlandcattle: There is no single AVI, QuickTime or Replay codec, they are just types of wrapper files and there are dozens of entirely different codecs. In the case for the former two all the recent high quality codecs are closed source and DRM infected. Only the low quality stuff no one uses any more (and that MovieFS can play) has open source implementations. The only reason you can get these for both Windows and Mac is the codecs are supplied as binaries in return for a hefty license, and being legal bound to preserve the DRM.

highlandcattle: How are you going to do that when most of them are closed source? (don't know if the ones used for this are, but most seem to be these days). The other question is wondering how well any current RISC OS hardware can handle the number-crunching requirements of recent codecs, 'though that part should be OK if you're happy without full screen and high frame rates.

ffmpeg has open source implementations of most popular codecs. It's unlikely to be fast enough on available RISC OS hardware though.

So if I was to convert these movies in another format using ffmpeg, which codec would I have to choose so that people can view them on their riscos boxes in Replay or MovieFS and vince could upload them. Does anybody know?

As mentioned back in reply 9 MPEG2 is the best universal format. If you wanted to bother with a RISC OS only format, then Moving Blocks HQ is the best option. Forget MovieFS, its 26bit only and no longer available.

Thanks to Leo for making these available. It's the first time I've being able to see the 'official' point of view. The Castle/ROOL talk, in partiicular, was very encouraging. I loiok forward to future developments.

em2ac: It's actually called Cineroma and it's been under development for years now. I know there have been several beta testers getting versions to try out, but these versions have never been made publicly available. David McEwen has said in the past he'll make it available when he finds it's ready for release, ie. stable and refined. Ofcourse, like all RO developers, he works on Cineroma in his spare time. Last I heard he's adding (even more) codecs and trying to get more speed out of it, after that a decent front-end, so we'll have a release by 2008, I suppose. Sorry it this sounds rude, but Cineroma has been known since 2002 or earlier and this platform is in urgent need of a media player. I hate to think a RO company has put off developing a commercial media player, because of Cineroma. I know for a fact the lack of a good browser and media player has made people leave the platform, so I wonder how many would be left to enjoy such apps on RISC OS when they'd be available.

Ah! thats why, and yes i did remember it, but couldn't find it in search engines, maybe I should spell it right eh?

I also agree about the whole commercial thing.

but as JDC says somethings need to be free..

I wrote to spellings on a forum of theirs asking if they were to develop a 'codec stack' as seen in AR, but for more modern codecs.

This way any player could tap into it, and we would only need a codec to be written so all players can open the file.

The codecs could be paid for, leaving the players to be free?

Just wish I had the know how to help out :@(
