Notate your music with abcMIDI

By Chris Williams. Published: 28th Jan 19:53:44 | Permalink | Printable

Sometime last week, Tommaso Leddi released a series of musical notation programs for RISC OS. When we finally caught up with Tommaso, he declined from comment, conscious of the fact that he is "not very able in English language". The applications are good enough to warrant a drobe news article, so here is a little information about them:

The programs are ports of abcMIDI, a utility originally by James Allwright. In the download, you can expect five applications that should cover your musical notational needs. According to Tommaso, Abc notation is a simple but powerful ASCII musical notation format. Devised by Chris Walshaw, abc is widely used for the notating and distribution of tunes, particularly on the internet. Very popular in traditional music circles, it is also gaining in popularity in early music.

With abcMIDI, you can convert MIDI files to and from the abc notation format as well as being able to print out scores in postscript format.

  • NetSurf team founds formal organisation
During a public meeting held over IRC tonight, the NetSurf team formally founded an organisation "in order to have a bank account and appropriate protections for the funds and assets of the NetSurf Project". Michael Drake was elected chairman in a three-way race for the top spot, John-Mark Bell was made treasurer and Daniel Silverstone was elected secretary. The group, which is partly funded by donations from punters, will hold its first AGM at the Wakefield 2009 Show on April 25.
