VirtualRiscPC fixed for RISC OS 6Published: 16th Dec 2006, 11:53:51 | Permalink | Printable
Boot bug was surprise says testerVirtualAcorn quashed conspiracy theories this week after releasing updates for VirtualRiscPC to allow older versions of the RiscPC emulator to run RISC OS 6.
VRPC-SE and VRPC-Adjust users were unable to boot Select 4, although people who upgraded to the latest StrongARM editions of the software could. Some users alleged there was a conflict of interest between the fault and VA boss Aaron Timbrell, who is also a director of RISCOS Ltd - which recently published the preview version of Select 4 RISC OS 6.
However, we understand RISC OS 6 relies on a timing quirk on non-StrongARM processor systems, which was not taken into account by the VirtualRiscPC emulator. The offending code, found in the system start up, is not executed on StrongARM systems, and is therefore skipped on VirtualRiscPC-StrongARM.
A VirtualRiscPC and RISC OS 6 tester backed VA, and said: "Aaron had no idea that RISC OS 6 Preview would not work on VRPC-Adjust until I was given a beta copy of ROS 6 Preview to test. I could not get it to boot. It was certainly not by design."
After apologising to punters, Aaron said: "VirtualAcorn would like to extend their thanks to the numerous beta testers who have been running RISC OS 6 on test versions of VirtualRPC-SE and VirtualRPC-Adjust over the last few weeks."
The free upgrades allow VRPC-SE and VRPC-Adjust to boot Select 4 RISC OS 6 Preview, and are available online for download. They also include updated versions of HostFS and the power management system.
