Acorn professor awarded CBE Published: 30th Dec 2006, 13:32:54 | Permalink | PrintableAcorn co-founder given Her Majesty's thumbs up Acorn co-founder Professor Andy Hopper has been made a CBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list. Prof Hopper set up the company with Hermann Hauser in 1978, but is also known for his research into high-speed wireless networks and other pioneering technologies. He also headed the Olivetti Research Laboratory, which was formed when Olivetti acquired Acorn in 1985. Twenty years on and among many other projects, he co-founded a new company to design chips with built-in VNC remote desktop servers.
The Cambridge University professor was awarded the gong for his services to the computer industry, and is joined by the likes of Californian-resident Rod Stewart and posh totty Zara Philips on this year's honours roll. He was described as an "enigma" in an interview with New Scientist earlier in May, which noted that many of today's computer scientists cut their teeth on early Acorn kit.
Acorn were responsible for the "fondly remembered BBC Micro", the Electron, the Archimedes and embedded processor giant ARM, according to the BBC, which adds that Acorn was broken up in 2000 after achieving popularity in the 1980s and 1990s.
Born in Poland in 1953 and now married with two children, Prof Hopper is also a keen amateur pilot, and has his own runway near his Cambridgeshire mansion.
