NetSurf nears version 1.0, goes mobilePublished: 29th Jan 2007, 23:54:35 | Permalink | Printable
GTK NetSurf swallows Nokia tabletThe NetSurf team have this week moved a step closer towards releasing the much awaited 'stable' release of their open source web browser. The group of volunteer developers have implemented their wish list of features for the highly anticipated 'version 1.0' milestone, and are now in the process of hunting down any remaining bugs. Although users can download regularly updated builds of NetSurf - fresh off the compiler and often considered 'bleeding edge' - version 1.0 is expected to be a polished and stable release of the software.
James Bursa, one of the more active NS developers, told fellow coders: "We've implemented all the features we wanted for version 1.0. We can now concentrate on bug fixing, unless anyone has an important feature that should be in 1.0."
The news came as Andrew Flegg revealed his NetSurf port to the Nokia 770 and N800 Internet-enabled tablets, pictured. The mobile kit is powered by a special brew of Debian GNU/Linux. Andrew said he uses NS on his little tablet "when Opera is deciding to be temperamental." The port was described as 'under development'.
He added: "There's a rather large stumbling block in that by drawing form entry fields directly, extra work is needed to hook it into the [770's] on-screen keyboard. The Mozilla port's suffered the same problem, so it should be possible to copy how they've done it."
