Popular ftp client FTPc reaches release 1.32

By Chris Williams. Published: 17th Feb 20:54:27 | Permalink | Printable

Earlier this week popular RISC OS ftp client FTPc was updated by author Colin Granville to version 1.32. FTP is a system that allows you to store and fetch files and resources from remote servers. A very useful application if you wish to create a website or do a lot of downloading.

You can drag'n'drop files to and from servers and FTPc 1.32 now supports url exporting and '/' in usernames.

Drobe got in contact with author Colin regarding the development of his internet utility.
"It started off as a simple ftp client for myself as the only other GUI client I knew about was ANT's but I didn't want the whole suite. I then decided to release it freeware because I had appreciated the efforts of PD authors of internet software when I first connected to the net.

"With the help of feedback from many users it has matured into a really flexible program. Unfortunately this means that it is not as simple as I had hoped.

"In the early days getting FTPc to read the wide variety of directory listings out there was the main problem, but now most problems fall into two categories Proxies and the User menu. Proxies are difficult because there is no standard for them and, unfortunately, the User menu has developed into a per site configuration file. This is necessary because some sites have particular requirements to make them work but it does make the User menu difficult for some people. Patrick Mortara's FTPcEdit program goes some way to help."
