Website launches 'help wanted' list

Developer seeking icon designer, GSOH non-smoker

Website RISCOS.info has set up a couple of simple webpages to get developers and punters working closer together. Coders John Tytgat and Theo Markettos created some space on the site's wiki to allow people to request help with their projects. And others looking to get involved in a project can sign up to show they are willing to help.

It is hoped the straight forward webpages will be used over time to coordinate future software development. The move came after users called for ways to collaborate with programmers on applications, such as providing documentation, testing and other work.

Acccording to the site, "If you have something you feel you can contribute to riscos.info or other RISC OS projects, but don't know where it might be needed, put some contact details on your userpage and state what you want to contribute on this page. Interested developers can then get in touch."

I have had an a/c on riscos.info for a while and this article stimulated me to log in and try to enter my details. After typing in masses of stuff I was foolish enough to believe that where the wiki said "Help page will open in a new window" it meant it. Alas with NetSurf it does not, so I lost all my efforts. Unless the wiki provides means for me to edit in StrongED and upload the file by dragging into a box I really do not think I can be bothered to struggle with the interface. Besides, the last date for news is 30th January, giving a moribund impression. Webpage UIs may be OK for people with capable browsers on other platforms, but for RISC OS users this road is blocked.

I find that whenever I use riscos.info to find out whats happening its best to use "recent changes" link - I agree with what you said about it being a shame that the news is not updated more often

Don't forget to use the preview button to see what your changes look like. The formatting codes are very simple and a quick overview is at [link]

I agree about the news bit. Personally I don't think riscos.info should have either a news or "current events" section. Such things are best left to places like drobe.

flibble: interesting. I didn't realise you were continuing Daniel's work. What about doing the development on a separate branch in the qemu riscos.info repository so that's more visible and could interest others as well ?

joty: There's not much point in putting the code in yet another repository (it's in svn already), but I'll look into making it a bit easier for developers to get hold of the source (in the mean time please email me and I can fill you in with the status and current limitations).

Good points. I've just added details of how to subscribe to riscos.info's RSS feed, so you can keep track of updates without even visiting the site

Peter's also made the Recent Changes link a bit more prominent, so it should be more apparent how much is going on.

flibble: Could you put up regularly-updated tarballs instead? A quick cron job running 'svn checkout' and then dumping it onto your server might suffice. It wouldn't protect against you doing occasional llame svn checkins, but that's the price we pay

I've updated [link] with src code snapshots, the svn logs, some more status details, and instructions on how to contact me with patches. I hope this is useful.

GavinWraith: I've updated NetSurf so it now fully implements the target="name" syntax (it previously only handled reserved names (_self, _blank, etc) and named frames.)
