ROOL mouse mat design revealed

Published: 1st May 2007, 23:06:18 | Permalink | Printable

How many logos do you recognise?

Here is the new 'map of the RISC OS community' mouse mat created by RISC OS Open to raise cash for their shared source project. The design was drawn up using logos of companies and organisations that have stumped up notes and sponsored ROOL. The final image was sent to the printers earlier today.

The mats are expected to be sold at this month's Wakefield show. Money raised will be spent on covering ROOL's running costs.

ROOL's Steve Revill said: "I'm sure you'll recognise most of the names on there.

"We've been working on the shared source project for twelve months, and almost all of the money that has gone into administration has come from our own pockets thus far, never mind the many man months' of effort.

"It may not seem to the outside that anything is happening, but it's been hard work none the less."

I can understand why they did it, and it is a nice idea. However, I think it looks a bit too busy - I'd get one, but wouldn't use it as a mouse mat :)

Hmmm. 101 uses for a ROOL mouse mat. Any takers? :-)

It does look quite nice with so many choices of community.

Sure strikes me how the old Acorn has gone and how 'wide' our 'little' community really is these days.

tribbles2: "I'd get one, but wouldn't use it as a mouse mat"

Yes, I have heard of people planing to buy one but keep it as a memento rather than actually using it. After all, mouse mats invariably end up rather scruffy.

Whether people buy them then frame them and put them on the wall, we'll have to see :)

Only 2 user groups...

Out of interest. Was the mouse mat designed by a semi/professional design agency?

I suspect there are many user groups who didn't join in purely through lack of finances. RONWUG for example doesn't charge and has no over head costs.

Besides- if they were all put on then the designs would have probably been too small to be readable.

We (ROUGOL) don't charge and a lot of the newer user groups don't either.

After all its not like the donation needed for the mat was a lot of money - a group of 10 members contributing a couple of quid each would have easily paid for it...

The fact that this mat is a statement of the community and there's only two user groups on there is really, really wrong.

RONWUG, SASUG and WROCC, for instance, hang your heads in shame!

I think, rather than point to and shame those who don't appear on the mat, it's better to take a positive view of those who *do* appear.

I'm particularly pleased, for example, that the top row appears to be VirtualAcorn, RISC OS Ltd, Iyonix Ltd, and Advantage6.

There was a week between announcement and cut-off day - or just one day from the drobe announcement! It was perhaps a touch too short for groups meeting monthly or less - but very well done MUG!

epistaxsis: "We (ROUGOL) don't charge"

We do have lots of overhead costs though ;-)

"RONWUG, SASUG [sic] and WROCC, for instance, hang your heads in shame!"

That's a bit harsh; I'm sure WROCC are quite busy with other things at this time of year. And even if RONWUG and SASAUG don't themselves feature, there's at least one entry on the mat from a member of each.

ROUGOL's own entry wouldn't have made it, if it weren't for Charles Barraball pushing the idea forward, Christian Ludlam sorting out a suitable version of the logo, and me, err, putting the donation on my credit card :-)

As VinceH said, it's good to see such good representation from the bigger players in the market. And it's also nice to see such a very wide selection of organisations; there are at least a few logos I don't recognise, and some were designed specifically as a result of this initiative.

Well done to all the participants, and to ROOL for sorting it all out and producing such a great design... let's hope all goes according to the plan at the printers.

dgs (speaking personally)

I forgot to mention... the finished mouse mats will hopefully also be on sale at the RISC OS User Group of London's May meeting on the evening of 21st May (two days after their launch at the Wakefield Show), when Martin Wuerthner will be our guest speaker.

Thank you for all your support - I have to admit, I was getting worried about fitting all of the logos on there! :) I'm glad people like the design, it was worth learning how to use ArtWorks to do it - special thanks to Martin Wuerthner for a trial copy.

See you all at Wakefield, a user group meeting or maybe another show on the busy RISC OS calendar.

Well thanks go to John Rickman who burnt the midnight oil redoing the MUG logo, Ron Briscoe for his normal words of encouragement!!! and my flexible friend for the payment. Still got a month to get payment sorted and as i'm giving a lift to Ron to Wakefield the threat of the seat ejector might help me achieve some of that.

MUG will be present on Serious Statistical Software's stand and hopefully sounding out running a Midlands 2007 show jointly with the ARM Club with a few key RISC OS people.

"RONWUG, SASUG and WROCC, for instance, hang your heads in shame!"

I can't speak officially for WROCC, but I know the idea was considered. Sadly, as others have said, the time between announcement and deadline was so short that by the time it was noticed and raised for discussion (we are fairly busy with other things at present), we had missed the deadline.

Had the deadline been a couple of days later, I suspect it would have been different...

I have only just seen this thread and have to say am rather annoyed at the comments that for some reason we at WROCC should hold our heads in shame over not being on the Mouse mat. We have been rather busy trying to keep the show alive. If you would rather we scrubbed the show to spend time raising money for ROOL please say so! I would then be able to get with other things.

Have you considered it might be more benefical if we were all buying one at the show instead.

Yes. I was amazed with the response we did get and it kept me very busy. I can only try to guess at how much work is involved in organising a show like Wakefield. I'd rather the mouse mat idea not be used to single-out people who didn't get on it.

There was also quite a short time between the announcement (i.e. me having the mad idea in the first place) and the deadline for getting something to the printers so they would be ready in time for the show, which didn't help a lot of people. Maybe there will be a mouse pat part deux... ;)

I hope so, as by the time I found out it was too late to put one in for the ARM Club, which fully supports ROOLs efforts. We'll make up for it by buy a few mats though.
