Top apps in first ROS 5 source release

BASIC, Paint, Draw, Filer and CDFS in initial batch

The first batch of the RISC OS 5 source code has been released today for free download, hours before the start of the Wakefield 2007 show. The upload comes after Castle revealed its shared source licence.

The first set of components released by RISC OS Open and Castle comprises of major applications and modules that form part of the backbone of the operating system.

These include utility CloseUp; desktop applications Paint, Draw and Edit; the RISC OS Filer and Pinboard; CDFS, various CD device drivers and CDFS Filer; the MessageTrans and BASIC modules; and Browse fetchers. The software is written in a mix of BASIC, C and ARM assembler.

A set of files and scripts are also available for download to help compile and build the operating system.

Interesting goodies include Basic, the Filer, Draw, Edit, CDFS, and the Browse support modules. Interestingly, there's no click-through licence to accept to even pretend might be binding.

Just sorry I can't be at the show to ask the odd question or too. Well fair dues to ROOL and Castle for coming through with this. The selection of released code is larger than I though it would initially be (good....).

rjek>Although it may not have a click through I think you'll find that people are expected to act in accordance with the terms - never mind the legalities of it - not all of the source is out yet and I can't imagine Castle would be prepared to continue releasing stuff if people didn't "play ball" as it were.

Well, the license is - as was expected - included in the downloads. For GPL software the license is ususally part of the download too so that I guess that does suffice.

rjek: There is no need for a click-through licence. That kind of thing mainly happens with commercial executable software downloads. With source code that can be copied there is no need and you do not see that kind of stuff with GPL software either. The point is that by default, you cannot do anything with someone else's source code. If you want to modify or use it in your projects you have to show that you have a licence to use it. So, there is no need for Castle to keep a record of you accepting the licence. You either do not do anything with the source code, then the licence is immaterial, or you use the source code in one of the ways permitted by the licence and then you have implicitly accepted the licence because without accepting it you would not be allowed to do the things you do.
