Royal Mail gives post sorting app thumbs up Published: 17th Aug 2007, 19:25:08 | Permalink | PrintableRISC OS tool gets accredited by national body  A RISC OS program that manages the mass distribution of snail mail was given a seal of approval by the Royal Mail this month. Rob Geleit's gSort1400's has been tested and certified by the Royal Mail's backroom sorting boffins. His tool is useful for businesses with large customer bases who can score postage discounts by bundling their mail by region.
Rob's software sorts a CSV list of addresses by postal distribution centre before they are printed onto envelopes or labels, conforming to the Royal Mail's Mailsort 1400 system - as seen on letters with an 'm' on the stamp.
Rob said: "Did you know that if you send over 4,000 letters in one go you can save on postage cost? If you bag up all the letters for each Royal Mail distribution centre separately you gain a discount.
"I've spent the last 18 months or so liaising with the Royal Mail Mailsort
Technical Department who have rigorously tested the software. They have now
accredited it and have entered me onto their suppliers directory."
The program's internal engine is written in C while the user interface is in BASIC. It is able to sort the Royal Mail's 28,000-strong test address list. A beta version is available for download for free from Rob's website. Rob, a graphic designer by day, is hoping to move into software development or testing at some point.
