Dutch RISC OS show called off

Published: 17th Aug 2007, 21:56:44 | Permalink | Printable

Lack of event venue to blame

Classic show news motifThe Dutch RISC OS show set to take place next month has been cancelled as its organisers were unable to secure a suitable venue. The Big Ben Club, overseeing this year's continental event, billed as a relaxed affair for enthusiasts, said it hoped to arrange a show for next year.

In a statement, Big Ben Club chairman Leo Smiers, treasurer Paul Porcelijn and secretary Jos Ulijn said: "Frustrated by the awareness that time did overtake our efforts, we now must let you know there will be no Dutch RISC OS event, planned for 22 September 2007. We failed to acquire an appropriate accommodation.

"For now there's disappointment, of course, and talk how to be more successful in an aimed 2008 event. Certainly this subject will be an item on the agenda of the Council of Representatives of the Dutch Big Ben Club, held on October 200 2007. We'll keep you posted."

The Dutch 2007 RISC OS event was expected to be a meeting of club members and RISC OS enthusiasts in a more informal and modest venue, easily reached by car, bus or rail - rather than the previous swanky Expo shows.

Meanwhile, an Arche Stammtisch event will be held in Essen, Germany, on September 2, the GAG-Clubtreffen 2007 and 39th a.u.t.o. meeting will take place at the end of next month, and back in the UK, the South East RISC OS show in Guildford on October 20.

This is sad news, indeed since the show in Neuwegein did offer the chance to visit a RISC OS show and meet several suppliers easier and cheaper than going all the way to UK. I hope things will work out in 2008.

Indeed sad news as for many people in Holland, Belgium, Germany this was THE show. I think it's just part of the declining interest in RISC OS.

After spending lots of money on it (Omega-no longer supported, A9-?supported?, Select subs) I've given up as well and have the whole lot for sale. My RiscPC is the only reliable machine and it lacks too many features and is nearing the EOL. So VRPC will be the only thing fired up every now and then.

Shows are such a big part of the RISC OS scene that losing one leaves a big hole. Having the opportunity to see products and talk to developers at shows is important for many people.

Perhaps some of the "bigger" RISC OS companies could get together to make something happen in Europe.

If you want a show in Europe it definitely won't hurt to let people know and post some positive stuff here.

I'm very disappointed, I loved doing the Dutch shows but was forced to miss the last couple. One of the reasons I learnt to fly was so I could nip across and do it in a day.

This sucks. I was looking forward to visit, catch up, buy a USB podule and perhaps some other stuff. I couldn't attend last year's show, so I sincerely hope someone can come up with a solution.

It may not be that obvious, but there are still a fair number of RISC OS users around in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, who would like to attend. The Dutch Expo has traditionally been the event where members of different user groups and other users come to meet and catch up. Needless to say this has quite a positive effect on the overall RO user. Perhaps RISCOS Ltd can come up with something, like they did with the roadshow thing?

Well, you can always go to the "GAG-Clubtreffen" (see [link]) in Wolfen - since that is on the premises of a4 computer you can ask them to have the odd hard and soft ware at hand. Opposed to UK shows the GAG meeting starts arount 10h in the morning and ends next day so that you don't go for so far a trip just for a few hours - accomodation is available and some options are on the web site.
