More printers supported with Gutenprint update

Sehr gut

Stylus C79Quality printer driver package Gutenprint for RISC OS now supports over two dozen more Epson printers. Developer Martin Wuerthner announced this week version 2.20 of the software can drive 30 new devices.

The list of freshly supported models is: PictureMate 200, 210, 240, 250, 280; PictureMate Flash, Pal, Snap; PM A820, PM D870, PM G4500, PM G850; Stylus Color C79 (pictured), C87; Stylus Photo 1400, 1410; Stylus Photo R230, R240, R245, R260, R265, R270; Stylus Photo R350, R360, R380, R390; and Stylus Photo RX560, RX580, RX590, RX640.

Martin said: "Gutenprint supports high-resolution printing with photo-real print quality and offers colour correction for different media types, such as glossy photo-paper, overhead transparencies, etc., as well as user-defined colour correction - for example, brightness, contrast and saturation."

Gutenprint was brought to RISC OS as a port of a library originally written for Linux and other Unix-based operating systems. It integrates with the RISC OS printing system to allow third party applications to print to more than 800 printer models, and its development is funded by donations.

• Meanwhile, some users have had success in using new all-in-one printers which combine printing and scanning into one device. By scanning to a memory card or USB memory stick, images can be easily transferred onto a RISC OS computer - skipping the need for someone to develop new dedicated scanning drivers. See this Usenet post or the rest of the thread for details.

This sounds like a very important application for RISC OS. Support for modern printers is extremely important for almost everyone.

Nice work Martin. Just one question...do you sleep???

stevek: Yes, I actually sleep a lot - there is little point in working a particular number of hours per day, it is far more important to work productive hours and for those I need enough sleep. As for this Gutenprint upgrade: While it was quite a bit of work for me to roll it out, all credits for the additional printer support are due to the Gutenprint team (most importantly, Robert L Krawitz). They do the real development. I only make things work on RISC OS.

Yes, but the point is that you do make it work for RISC OS and this is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you I was able to use a brand new Epson model out of the box with my RISC OS kit. Printing is so vital and partly enjoyable when you see the results of one's photographic efforts ! Cheers

Thanks to Martin for his continued efforst on our behalf.

With the MFP - scanning for Epson is covered by Ian Hamilton's MFPxEpson. I have had a CX5300 and recently bought a CX6500 and it works perfectly. It also gives you info on ink levels.

So an Epson CX???? MFP will work well on RISC OS without resorting to saving via a memory card. I found the card readers to be very slow with direct scanning far quicker with better options.
