Network RISC OS to Windows with Topcat 2.0: Improve your network today

By Chris Williams. Published: 1st Mar 18:44:28 | Permalink | Printable

Earlier this week, Microlynx announced the release of version two of their networking software, Topcat, as part of their continued commitment to supporting the RISC OS platform.

Microlyx's Topcat is software which is installed on an NT or Windows 2000 Server to provide a RISC OS desktop and applications to recent RISC OS computers, including the various network computers (NCs) available. Topcat also includes Citrix's ICA Client, which when used with Citrix Metaframe, allows RISC OS computers to run all the latest Windows applications, such as Microsoft's Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint etc), even on computers with as little as 4MB memory. According to Roy Eastwood of Microlynx, "Topcat also makes connecting Acorn machines to the Internet a doddle".

Features new to Topcat 2.0 include:

  • Long Filenames in RISC OS
  • ICA Client with Sound support in Windows
  • New Topcat Client which supports DHCP (avoids having to enter Address Reservations - for 2Mbit clients only.)
  • Simple Load Sharing of multiple Citrix servers
  • Compatible with Windows 2000
  • Sample scripts for printing and e-mail
  • Includes demo version of Oregano web browser
  • File conversion Utility
  • Client Upgrade utilities
  • Local Settings allow easy way to select Filer
  • Increased Security - Boot Password configurable in DHCP Manager
  • Various improvements to operation

As Roy explained to Drobe, "Microlynx specialises in services to the Education market, both in the UK and overseas, providing server software, installation, configuration and training to schools and colleges."

Whilst a new Topcat Client is provided as part of this release, existing Topcat Clients can be used with Topcat version 2.0. The new version will cost £499, but for a limited period, existing Topcat Customers can upgrade for the special price of £250. This offer is valid until 31st May 2001.
