Walking in Memphis: Manage your temporary files

By Chris Williams. Published: 16th Mar 18:15:38 | Permalink | Printable

On RISC OS computers, the RAM Disc is a very fast and easy means of temporary storing files whilst working. If a RAM Disc is removed or the computer is switched off or reset, the contents of the RAM Disc is lost- unless of course you copied the files to a more permanent location like a hard disc.
A RAM Disc can be created from the Taskmanager window, the space allocated to it is defined by the user and is taken out of spare main memory. Unfortunately, once a RAM Disc has been created and there are files in it, its size cannot be changed. So if you created a 4Mb RAM Disc and later want to save a 6Mb file onto it then you will have to remove the RAM Disc and create a new one at 6 or more Mb. This can get a tad annoying, especially if you use the RAM Disc a lot. One work around is to create a very large RAM Disc but this takes up system memory that you might need later for a large application.

Memphis, a freeware application that has become a household name for long term RISC OS users, is a RAM disc replacement. It works by taking memory from the system sprites area, a seldom used memory area that is fast and can be re-sized at will. So you'll be pleased to know that Memphis has been updated to enable it to use new style RISC OS 4 sprites.

Now released by Paul Johnson although originally written by Brian Brunswick and Nick Smith, Paul has put up the new version on his website. In his announcement Paul explains, "Memphis offers a pile of extras - the most popular being that can resize the disc without having to clear, quit and allocate more space in the taskmanager... The full sources are available also."
