MW Software release JPEGObject for ArtworksBy Chris Williams. Published: 24th Mar 22:00:44 | Permalink | Printable
Martin Würthner, is best known for developing numerous plugins for top RISC OS vector graphics package, Artworks and indeed late last year drobe.co.uk reported on the history of MW Software. This week has seen another Artworks plugin from Martin, JPEGObject. Artworks plugins, by the way, are small utilities that reside inside the Artworks application and provide extra facilities and commands to aid in your graphic design.
According to Martin's press release, JPEGObject allows you to embed JPEG images directly in your ArtWorks documents without having to decompress them to Sprite format first. JPEG handling is very similar to sprite handling: You can move, scale, skew and rotate JPEG objects like any other ArtWorks object. You can resize them by dragging any of the selection handles and there is a JPEG object info box that allows you to position and scale the image numerically. Undo is fully supported and a file containing a modified JPEG can still be exported as a drawfile or EPS, so applications like OvationPro can have the images in normal documents.
JPEGObject will only run on RISC OS 3.5 or greater and needs a JPEG-enabled version (0.99 or greater) of SpriteExtend, one of the standard RISC OS relocatable modules. JPEG-enabled versions of SpriteExtend are built into RISC OS 3.6+, although a soft-loadable SpriteExtend 0.99 is available for RISC OS 3.5 users.
JPEGObject costs £15 (via email; add £2.50 for snail-mail delivery) and is available in the usual way: For e-mail delivery, send Martin a cheque or bank notes and an e-mail with the subject "JPEGObject order". Alternatively, an online credit card system has been setup with UK Shareware Registeration Ltd., a link to which can be found on the JPEGObject page.
Martin also has some good news regarding the Wakefield 2001 show.
"I am glad to announce that I will be at the Wakefield 2001 Show, stand 71 on Sat/Sun May 19/20. There, you have the chance to see all my modules in action and take advantage of special show offers", Martin informed drobe.co.uk.
Finally, I thought it might be an idea to give Martin's efforts on bug fixing Artworks a mention. As Martin explained to drobe, "Recently, a lot of effort has been spent on bug-fixing the main ArtWorks application and the standard modules supplied with ArtWorks. The 'Known ArtWorks bugs and fixes page' at www.mw-software.com/software/awmodules/awbugs.html shows the progress of this effort." From the above link you can find links to patches and upgrades to iron out the known Artworks oddities.

Star Fighter 3000: The Next Generation was born from the 3D0 version of the original SF3K that was ported back to RISC OS and this year freed from programmers' hard discs for the platform to enjoy, writes Andrew Weston.
