South East 2008 theatre talk videos now online

Published: 24th Nov 2008, 20:56:18 | Permalink | Printable

Didn't make to the South East 2008 show in Guildford this year? Not to worry, because on top of the usual Drobe coverage, you can now watch videos of the presentations made by RISC OS Open and RISC OS Ltd staff at the event. Recorded live at the show, the videos, in which products and projects are talked up by developers to punters, also include question and answer sessions from the floor.

Click on each of the stills below to see the videos, streamed via Google Video. A modern PC or Mac with a recent Flash player will be necessary to watch the videos over the web - or alternatively download the files and convert them with the FFmpeg port into an MPEG2 format KinoAmp can play.

The RISC OS Open talk

Starring ROOL's Andrew Hodgkinson and Steve Revill

The RISC OS Ltd talk

Starring ROL boss Paul Middleton

Hat-tip to Leo White for recording and uploading these videos.

Having watched the videos, my verdict is: -

ROL Presentation - Bland ROOL Presentation - Not quite as bland but still lacking

Had Iyonix Ltd also been there, we could have all caught up on some sleep!

Martin's talk was probably the most interesting, but unfortunatly the battery in my video camera died half way through.

I'm planning on getting the first half (Artworks related) uploaded soon. Assuming Google Video doesn't get broken again...

After being there for both of the presentations. ROOL at least appeared mildy upbeat and with an idea of what it might do in the future. ROL however, if I hadn't been turning Leo's camera on and off I would have wandered off.

Leo: Thanks for your efforts in sharing this with everybody, especially those that couldn't attend. I do have a suggestion for next time, though. Perhaps there's a possibility to record the audio directly from the amplifier system, provided you've got plenty of cable! The acoustics of the room make the microphone recording a bit difficult to make out.

ROL's presentation comes across as pretty boring. I do suppose Paul Middleton has interesting stuff to talk about, but his delivery is so dull and monotone. I'm sure some people doze off or left the room halfway. He should take (presentation) lessons and try to improve this - it could very well lead to increased sales afterwards. I found ROOL's talk to be much more interesting and better delivered, especially by Steve Revill.

I'm with you. I really do think Paul needs to try and come across more upbeat. All his presentations, even when showing interesting new features of Select, always seem really boring. I think rather than attending that broadcasting(I think that's what he said) seminar, he should be attending talks on how to present and how to engage with the audience.

I do plan on getting an external Mic. for the camera, as the built in one does pick up a lot of the background noises (And the show noises on the other side of the wall). Hopefully that will improve things.

Hmmm. Needs jazzing up, eh? Maybe next time I'll do a funky dance or something.

Nah, it was great. Ignore the critics. Though funky dances are, of course, always welcome :)

Out of interest, are you any closer to a release of the full ROM yet? Or do you think 2009 is more realistic?

So the RISC OS South West show will be worth attending, just to checkout ROOL's new floor show in the show theatre!

Argh. What have I started...?

Can't say much about ROM releases unfortunately - it's not clear when things will happen. We're working on it but as usual, things have to take a back seat when paid work gets in the way. Pesky mortgages :)

Haven't yet watched the ROOL video but i thought the ROL video was interesting. would be nice to of seen more of the features in the talk.

One thing i have a question about is about is the issue of ROM based RISC OS or disk loaded, Paul mentioned the 6.10 couldn't fit on a ROM and so would have to be disk loaded.

No. 1 what is the size of the 6.10 code?

And is the ROM limit a restriction what size ROM acorn machines can recognize or a technological limit on the size of ROM's that can be manufactured?

kuliand: The RiscPC's ROM sockets can only contain 4MB of data - there simply aren't the address lines for more. Previous select releases were small enough (about 6MB) that they could be compressed into 4MB. I assume 6.10 has become too large to compress into 4MB.
