Select 5i1 released to subscribersPublished: 7th Dec 2008, 18:26:42 | Permalink | Printable
RISCOS Ltd is set to ship a new version of its stream of RISC OS, understood to be Select 5i1, to its RISC OS Select subscribers. Punters at the Midlands Christmas 2008 show on Saturday report they were able to pick up CDs of the new release from the ROL stand.New features in RISC OS 6.14, which lies at the heart of this latest Select release, include the ability to allow sub-menus opened partially off screen to slide their parent menus across the desktop allowing the sub-menu to appear in view without it overlapping another menu. The operating system now supports the CIELAB colour model, a 64,000-colour screen mode and a new 16bpp !Paint sprite mode, improved transparency support in !Paint, transparent window furniture, configurable furniture colours and more. At least 50 bugs have been fixed, we're told.
A source close to ROL's development team said: "This has got to be the quietest OS release by ROL to date. There was no time for an announcement to be made before the Midlands show but one should be coming soon. A lot of work has gone into improving the support for transparency in sprites and over 50 bugs have been squashed."
A screenshot of !Draw and the RISC OS colour picker featuring the new colour models and variable transparency for objects is here. RISC OS 6.14, dated December 1, was also reportedly seen running on A9home kit on the AdvantageSix stand at the Midlands show. RISC OS 6 is used to power recent RISC OS Select releases from ROL and a port of ROS 6 for the A9home is still awaiting a public release.
A ROL spokesman confirmed this evening that Select 5i1 featuring RISC OS 6.14 is on its way to Select susbcribers and an official announcement will be made tomorrow. The company earlier this month announced the availability of RISC OS 4.02 and 4.39 upgrade CDs and from tomorrow will allow people to buy ROS 4.02 ROM images for machine emulators.
