RISC OS 5.14 softloaded on an Iyonix: first screenshot

Published: 15th Dec 2008, 22:51:06 | Permalink | Printable

Adrian Lees has been beavering away on a softload tool released as part of the RISC OS Open Shared Source scheme to get it to boot the project's RISC OS 5.14 ROM image from his Iyonix hardware - allowing him (and soon anyone else) to try out and test the ROM builds before committing them to Flash ROM. See this thread for details.

Nice to see this progressing for all Iyonix users out there.

I'd agree - well done Adrian.

Being able to do this should make it easier for developers to add and test new features without risking making their machine unbootable.

sa110>As RO5 is a open version of RISC OS this development may benefit *all* RISC OS users not just Iyonix ones - anything that furthers OS development (and being able to softload *does* do that) is IMHO a good thing.

I am well aware that some of what ROOL do may also be applicable to other versions of RISC OS. That is one of the reasons I have purchased their mouse and cup mats as well as their 2009 calendar. I also currently use the softloadable DOSFS module on my A9.

sa110:

So just awaiting the A9 HAL then - so you can run a proper OS on it? ;-)

And downgrade! No thankyou. When RISC OS 5 has the same feature set, I may think about it.

But if the A9 (and RPC) had a HAL, then ROL could develop RO 6 for it and so RO 6 on the Iyonix would be possible. (And it would open the possiblity of emulators proving a HAL.)

Me and many others :) You should try 6.14 and see what you are missing.

It's a shame it shows the old version of Alarm (which uses the old system font) instead of the new (which uses the desktop font) and which is part of RO5.14

Marvellous! Well done to all concerned. :)

I for one hope to see an eventual release for my RiscPC(s)... ...My hope is not only for the continued development of my favourite OS but that all this activity may eventually result in a HAL tightly integrated into an emulator with all the potential benefits that may bring.
