Nominations open for the Drobe Awards 2008

Published: 16th Dec 2008, 23:20:43 | Permalink | Printable

Tell us who's made your year in the RISC OS world

It's time again to find out who's been naughty and who's been nice in this year's Drobe Awards. As per usual people will be able to vote on a shortlist of the best commercial software, best non-commercial software, best innovative project, best show and top clanger of 2008, which will be drawn up within the next day or so - and now's your chance to nominate those who have contributed to the RISC OS platform this year. Either post a comment below or email them in. Be quick because voting will open soon to allow enough time for everyone to pick their favourites from the shortlist before the year is out.

Best commercial software: Hmm. Not much going on here. I guess ArtWorks and EasiWriter are the only two contenders. Both are fantastic apps, though.

Best non-commercial software: NetSurf's bound to get this, and a worthy winner it will be. But PrivateEye and Parmesan deserve an honourable mention too.

Best innovative project: ROOL, surely. The GCC guys deserve credit too, as do the RPCEmu team.

Best show: No idea, sadly.

Top clanger: ROL's recent usenet diplomacy.

Top RISC OS website: C'mon - have a category for this! Much as I like the Iconbar, RISC OS just isn't the same withour Drobe :)

Gone Quiet award: Projects to update the PostScript drivers and CDFS seem to have gone a bit silent. Which is a shame, as they sounded fantastic and very useful. Hopefully they haven;t stalled, and a release is just around the corner...

Concerning the PostScript driver project, IMHO it is coming along very well and Martin and I have determined tentative announcement date which helps us keeping focused on the project as it is challenging for both of us to allocated sufficient developer time (personally I want to get gccsdk 4.1.1 Release 1 out of the door as well).

best commercial software: still ARTWORKS. I've also found OVATION PRO useful when producing postscript files (using a Windows driver) as it is cross-platform (but if/when the POSTSCRIPT DRIVER becomes available, that should not be necessary). GVIEW is the only RO Postscript/PDF file reader which gives an accurate result on virtually all files IME.

best non-commercial software: NETSURF is way out in front. DRAWPRINT (H M Phillips) I use all the time to print out Netsurf pages and is hugely useful.

best innovative project: that's got to be ROOL. A fast emulator for open-source RO on Linux would be a vote-winner too if it existed in finished form: here's hoping.

best show: no nomination (I didn't go to any this year).

top clanger of 2008: undoubtedly the recent licensing flare-up. I sincerely hope the parties involved will put this genie back in its box and nail the lid down.

Best Commercial Software David Snell's WebWonder, Chris's Acorns wouldn't exist without it. Best non-commercial software Alex Waugh's Sunfish/Moonfish. I replaced Omniclient/LanmanFS/Lanman98 with NFS and it just keeps working on RISC OS, Windows and Linux. Best Show South Esat RISC OS Show 2008. Guildford.
