Classic Archimedes technical bible republished online

Published: 26th Jan 2009, 19:42:10 | Permalink | Printable

A PDF conversion of the Van Somerens' formidable "Archimedes Operating System - A User's Guide" has been uploaded to the internet. Originally published in 1991, the 320-page tome revealed how the internal gubbins of the Acorn Archimedes and its operating systems (including an early RISC OS) worked - all in an easy to follow guide for novice and advanced programmers and computer hardware enthusiasts.

This is an excellent resource and well worth a read. Thanks to whoever it was that made this available.

I never had that book, so it's good to finally see it, but I also had the ARM assembler book. It's where I first learned ARM coding, which has proved pretty useful in the years since.

I am trying to read this but have not found a satifactory way of viewing it on RISC OS. !RiScript renders the text nicely but I get two errors on each page which have to be cancelled. !PDF is curious. It seems to paint the screen twice. The first time the text appears to be in a vector font, but then it is over-painted with a rough looking bit map font. ArtWorks wont load it because it runs out of memory.

The obvious alternative choice would be Ghostscript/GView.

Tick either the "No text" or "No images" option in !PDF's Display menu. That should do the trick.

Thanks, with "No images" ticked the book displays nicely in Trinity font. It seems the book was set with Palatino but the font was not imbedded.
